One use I have found is roof top gardens. It looks pretty cool if you place down just the rows you plan to plant on while leaving the rows in between empty until after you hoe your planting rows. Once they are hoed, fill the middle rows with sod. This will allow those vacant rows to have the sod texture. If you place them before using the hoe though, it will change the vacant rows the same way it does the soil.
Another use is for creating paths. It looks nice as it blends in well with the other dirt like material blocks, but has that brick like pattern to it. Similarly, you can do decent looking brick patios around your base to set it off better from the surrounding ground.
One last use is doing things like sewers, dungeons, or maintenance tunnels that you want to look dark and grimy. Really adds to the atmosphere in low lit dark areas.
