I have looted a pig with no issues. Although the pig was stuck twirling around a stick bush.
By the way, occasionally they will provide no loot, it's down around about 5-10 % from my experience.
Corn, potatoes, with the occaisional can of chili keep me going.
So, I suppose, the key is to shoot from stealth at a decent range, then close in only to a long range shot while stealthed, and keep firing.
The animals seem to run only so far. Once you figure out what that range is, you can pummel them at will without them moving even though they should.
This might be something they should fix. But at the moment, it's a benefit to us.
Leads me to believe that the way it dies has something to do with it. Hopefully its a bug that will be fixed sooner than later yeah.
I've never had an animal drop no loot, except by popping up a console error first. My fault for not wanting all the fat and bones :) I'm an opportunist hunter anyway - I scavenge from the animals that drop dead at the sight of me.
