So yeah, just keep looking and you'll have gun powder for life, haha.
I think most deposits of Ores are now in Caves, I used to Build a Base in or close to a City, but with 0 day spawning now " Zombies 24/7 " its not wise to live in the City, I now might spend a day or two in a City looting and sleeping in a safe Building, then Build my Base just far enough out that you dont get the City Zombies attacking non stop.
btw is it true that now you get ore only from caves? I mean digging like before is pointless?
If you are playing the Navesgane map, then you won't be getting any caves so ores will still be found by just digging into the ground.
If you are in random gen, then caves are the little black spots on your map when you search a biome. From what I have seen, caves have a tendency to spawn towards the edges of the biomes.
Coal is abundant in the burnt wastelands - just hack up the fires. It takes a bit more effort, but it's coal ;-)
change "caves" to "all" in biomes.xml:
ofc, won't work for map chunks already generated.
Spoiler alert:
To easily find caves, run around the edges of biomes and watch your overhead map. The entrances appear as small black circles (or darker circles). Frequently they are clumped 2-3 near each other.
