My job is manufacturing doors and windows, I've been doing it for many years, now I can only talk about the UK market here. this applies to modern doors not the older rim lock style of door. Unless the owner of said house has left the key in the lock, even you breaking a hole through the door to be able to reach in, you couldnt unlock it, you need a key, of course if the owner had left the key in the lock then they couldnt have locked it from the outside, the only exception I know of to this rule is if the lock is fitted with a thumb turn cylinder, that is a style of lock that has a knob fitted to the point where a key would typically insert, that kind of lock doesnt require a key inside and yes breaking a hole through the door and reaching through will allow you to turn said lock and open the door.
i agree 100%.. except in the big apartment buildings. I've lived in a couple big apartment buildings like that, and they tend to not have the turning lock knob on the inside - this prevents residents from locking themselves out accidently.. you use the dead-bolt while inside... I'm in the practice of always using my key to lock my door, even when i don't have to; it means I always have key in hand and will never lock myself out :D
Also a lot of doors on the inside of buildings are like that, even in office buildings, where you can turn the lock on the inside and open in, or on some doors where it wont turn on the outside, but your able to turn the handle and open it on the inside. But I also understand that this game is still in early access so it is still being worked on.
On a side note, another thing I would really like, when there is a 1x1 hole in a doorway, window, etc, you should be able to crawl/climb through the hole at a very slow pace, that way you can sneak in and out of buildings without having to demolish the whole front wall just to get in (Sarcasm)
