All you need is a decent computer, and an internet connection that's faster than dial-up. In this way, 5-8 people can play together, be safe from hackers/griefers, and always have fun :)
I believe I have a very good computer, The problem is port forwarding especially for this game, I have port fowarded many games, Terraria, Minecraft, Project Zomboid and a lot of others but I find this game to be like I said a pain in my ass, Also since then my internet company has changed and my internet isn't to great, My friend would have to host the server yet he knows nothing about portfowarding.
As I said I'd rather have actual servers that you can host by a click of a button through steam of the company, I'd rather not pay $10 a month for 8 people when it would just be me and my one to two friends that maybe play a couple hours.
BlueFangSolutions was a great host for me, I'd highly reccomend them for anyone looking to rent a 7dtd server.
Many other games who appear to have games hosted by steam are using a P2P kind of system where it is actually hosted BY the players (without them realizing it) and not on a server someplace.
Your best bet is to look into one of the server hosters and see if you can get a deal (something like 10$ a month seems pretty standard for a smaller server) otherwise find a friend with a good internet connection and a spare PC / laptop to host it for you. If you have port forwarded before it is no different for this game. Port forwarding is port forwarding, if you can do it for port xxx you can do it for any of them the same exact way.
Also when hosting locally you don't NEED to keep it up 24/7, just have it running when your friends are on and are wanting to play. Pointless to keep it running if no one is on from say 2AM - 9AM. If playing with a small group of personal friends this is pretty easy to coordinate and doubtful you will need it up 24/7
I realise that having servers cost money but having that will just bring more and more money in, And why would/should I have to pay $10 for a company to host a server with an extra 5-6 slots I am never going to use for $10 a month, I also agree with the port forwarding part but not all games are exactly easy, I port forwared an okay amount of games in my time but with this game people get connection issues, I followed a guide step by step and this thing didn't even work.
Now obviously it is my fault that it didn't work but I port forwarded like I always do.
You don't have to pay anyone for a server as you already can host it yourself, so save the money, host it yourself (or have a friend host it) and not worry about it.
As far as port forwarding, the only tricky thing is what port to open, and that completely depends on what port you set you game / server to run on, as long as you open up the proper ports there shouldn't be an issue. You can even use one you already opened by adjusting the port setting in your MP game or the Dedicated Server files. (I use 26900 as that was the default port I saw when attempting to host a server)
If you do have issue after that point head to the games official forums and post a topic there giving the details.
I said they would gain money as I know quite a few people who do not want this game because it is hard to host servers, I just hope in the future they might go with dedicated servers instead of advertising third party sites that want money, Like I said I have tried to port forward this game many times with constant failing, I watched guides and came out with nothing but frustration, I still would like to play the game but setting up the server is frustrating.
TFP changed the default port recently so you probably followed an outdated guide that told you to open port 25000... that is not the default port anymore. It's 26500 now. Forwared 26500-26503 and you shouldn't run into any issues. Or if you already have 25000 forwarded then edit the serverconfig.xml and change the port number back to 25000.
This is the frist game I have ever tried to run my own server with and it was not difficult to setup by any means.
As far as TFP hosting the servers you seem to be under the impression that you wouldn't have to pay like you do now if you go with a hosting company like bluefang. Why wouldn't you have to shell out more cash if TFP where doing the hosting. Servers cost money any company is going to charge you to make some of it back one way or another.
I tried quite a while ago, Also what do you mean you would have to pay it back? Lot
s of games go with the easy hosting for people and don't charge anything with no P2P elements involved.
