Best way to get Scrap Iron
I need Scrap Iron for upgrading my Woodframes and Wood Log Spikes. Where do I get lots of it?

Only way I know is to loot tons of Scrap Metal Blocks in the Wasteland.
Are there good alternatives?

Mining. Use TNT - blow your way down until it stops. Then go sideways - you'll find loads of iron and lead ore.

Alternately, find the city and raid the police stations. The shelves have a good conversion ratio to scrap iron.

Iron Ore .. I dont know. First you need a Mine, than a Iron vein and get those Iron Ore. I think for 1 Iron Ore i get 12 Scrap Iron. And I need 2 Scrap Iron to upgrade 1 Wood Frame. So...

1 Iron Ore = 6 Upgraded Wood frames.
And a medium sized Base can easily have like --- lets say a Perimeter with 600 Blocks to upgrade. So this would be 100 iron Ore. Sounds like a lot of Mining to me.

Open-faced cliffs have right much iron ore too. They're good places to start your mine as well. Done it twice so far, and both times we came out with some even to spare.

Find the bombed out wasteland area and mine all those metal girders you see scattered around everywhere, more scrap iron than you could ever need..

Best advice ever. It takes a while to convert the girders into scrap but honestly you can't beat them for scrap iron. They even re-spawn over time.

Yep when ever I'm going to be upgrading and need iron scrap this is how I get mine. Unless my mine has been overly abundant and I have stacks of ore.. like what I have after all the mining I did this weekend. I have like 576(give or take) ore ready for smelting down.

Just curious, do you do what I do? I stack all my ore in the forge so I have currently 300+ ore in my furnace and every once in a while I chuck coal ore in and make some ingots.

Yes I have a forge just for ore and I'm always throwing more ore in there (it's never empty) but I also use the cooking fire to super stack... which can get you into trouble sometimes but saves a lot of space.

Also have forges dedicated to jars, bullet tips and casing... fires cooking gain alcohol 24/7 for gas. I went through ruffly 350 gas cans this weekend. I mined a lot...

Couple alternatives, you can dig out the ground below a rusted out car body. You have to get all the area under not just around the edges. Drops 16 (not exactly sure of #). Really only easy to do if the it is all over sand seeing how easy it is to dig. Second, a lot of the railings you see in buildings can be wrecked for scrap iron. If you already have a shotgun/pistol/hunting rifle, all the metal parts you find can be scrapped.

I always save coal for TNT.

I notice that you can mine rocks with your stone axe(unless you already have a pick), and it will get you iron, but then again, thats slow.

you can easly get about 9 scrap iron from the car hulks like those scattered all over the wasteland. the fastest and easest way to get is to dig the ground out from under the car. which then falls and breaks into about 9 iron scrap peices.

Ahh that's how you do that. Strange you can pick up a load of bricks but not all those pieces of scrap iron laying around.... thought it was just for looks until now. Funny you actually have to mine the scrap laying on the ground. Bad design decision if you ask me.

All the rails around the apartments are 2 hits to knock down and one scrap iron for each rail.

Grocery store/supermarket. There is metal shelving all around the main room which can be destroyed with a pickaxe. Youll get plently of iron from those. I cant remember if you can turn the ingots into scrap iron (if you cant just use the ingots themselves) but its a good place to get iron.

You can put those directly in the forge.
