Is Mining too time consuming?
Seems that even with a sledge hammer and axe that I had, it takes forever to break thru walls, and trying to get enough wood to build a structure takes ages too.

Its much slower than in minecraft for comparison, that game you would get 4 wood planks from 1 tree piece that took like 3 or 4 quick hits with an axe.
This game you get 2 frame blocks or 1 solid block from 1 wood chunk that takes 4 times longer to get than minecraft did. (and I am taking into account you get multiple from 1 tree)

Not to mention how long it takes to get an iron ignot, u need to bust down a million rocks and trees to get a handfull of these.

And I still thought it took too long in minecraft, spent way too much of my time mining.

What do you guys think? am I doing something wrong? is there a chainsaw or something later in the game?

Well as ore deposits are randomly generated and theres no way (yet) to find them you should stick to farming surface rocks, don't forget to melt scraps etc if you can afford it.
We'll see if they add a way to find deposits underground later.

Don't forget this is a survival game and thus it's pretty hard to do about anything.

What tools are you using?

The Pickaxe if used for mining.
The Sledgehammer is used for...i'm not sure...i think squishing zombies.
At least thats what i use it for.

In RGW maps there is a TON of iron to be had if you look for clay deposits on sheer cliff faces.
The clay is useful for construction materials and below that you will usualy find iron, coal then deeper down potassium nitrate.

A stone axe on a few boulders will get you plenty of iron after a small time investment, especially combined with tin cans from garbage. Also, if you wander into the wastelands, there is scrap iron everywhere. And as Lerch says, iron is obvious in the new cliff walls.

With the new cliffs I find mining underground to be unnecessary...although I still love tunneling for the sake of tunneling :)

Yepper.
Mining is really fun now.

on the small test i have make in mining using a stone axe, (and i play at 200% for the resistance of the block), it's take me 20 punch for the clay, a little less for the dirt, for the rock i don't remember, but for the iron ore we found in the ground it's take me 85 punch to be able to have one iron ore (so the pickaxe are better when you want ore)

but like "The Horsefish" say, it's better to begin with the big rock on surface to try to find iron ore and you don't have a pickaxe, but when you have one it's better to go take the iron ore underground because they give more iron by unit you extract when you put it in the forge...

for the wood, putting down a tree, ask me neer 20 punch too (at 200%) and with an stone axe, with a fire axe, i don't remember but the difference are not big, so i don't use a fireaxe,

for the tool, you have the stone axe they will be your friend for more of the thing, like chopping grass, repair wall, chopping tree, bush, ect...

you have the shovel for the land, when you need to dig for long time this is a good tool, the sledge hammer have no big use, they seem to be good for fightning, but one a house it's take neer more time than any other thing and if we thing they need metal to repair it, the cost are too hight to use it as a tools, and the pickaxe are good for the rock and all the thing they are under the dirth and clay or for the big rock on the surface...

about the difference between this game and the minecraft, i don't know, i have never playing minecraft, when i look the video of this game they seem having too much people mentally unstable they play to this game, so i have not testing this game...

Find a chainsaw for wood, auger for everything else, if on RWG, walk til you find a few gas stations and loot the oil barrels, mine/gatherwood/bust down wood barricades all day long.

They did intentionally want mining to be slower than say, breaking up boulders on the surface. It isn't supposed to be anywhere near as fast as a game like Minecraft. MC is more of a casual game, this is more of a survival game with a higher difficulty curve. The nice resources you can get from mining should be offset by a greater investment in time/energy/resources to get them.

Yep, look around and if you spot clay then you'll get coal and iron; it's how I prospect for iron. Also the sheer cliffs that RWG gives exposes the pattern how it RNG the deposits, just keep a mental picture of it. And I believe somewhere they said iron deposits are closer to the surface, so digging at bedrock you'll rarely get any deposits other than rock or the rare Tungston (sp?) I think.

Felt same thing... I think we need some "fast efficient" config, and high tier tools and it's recipes like "reinforced pickaxe". (Also more various of weapons and traps needed though.)

What do you guys think?

Play Minecraft. :-)

You guys raise good points... and I agree since it does make sense survival should be hard.

Given what was said I do feel there should at least be a higher tear of mining tools, power tools or something like that to allow people to build truly massive and awesome structures without using creative mode so that you still have zombies chewing away at your stuff.

I mean why not right? if you've already gotten that far in the game than why force people to be labourers.
knight-1 Sep 7, 2014 @ 1:32pm
you can adjust all options anytime...so put in creative and build somyhing then turn it off same goes for the zeds start out on easy or zed spawning off then turn it up as you go.

PS Right now when you set the options its not set in stone so you can adjust them everytime you quit then go back in, I hope they do make it so the options are st the first time and then you cant change them again unless you start a new game becausse that would make more sense.

there are also iron girders/beams usually found right next to cinder blocks..in the ruble/wastland biome..the one where all the buildings are destroyed...you can break those down and each one gives 6 iron scrap.
Itheripus Sep 27, 2014 @ 12:36pm
Well in my game I mine.. I have mined a huge vein of iron and lead and have at least 200 of each ingot smelting. I still also have 6 more branches of veins to mine...
