so, if I'm putting spikes on the bottom, that's going to count as a level right? So 4 blocks deep, add spikes to the bottom, it's good ya?

Yes, spikes count as a level

Also I did a similar thing.
Trenches are over rated and most often don't work

Its easier to build a 5 high wall with spikes at the bottom and ramps on the top so they can't climb up

Actually walls are overrated, all you need is a 3x2 trench and it stops the biggest feral hordes. Besides that, you can easily shoot them if you fancy a shoot out.
I posted it in this thread, http://steamcommunity.com/app/251570/discussions/0/611696927918913828/#c611696927922280072
Saves you a ton of concrete and reparing etc.

You forget that you also need to fortify the trech walls or otherwise they will undermine your foundations

It takes extra time and effort building a wall doesn't require

Plus unless you have lots of shovels or a steady way to repair them then digging a trench is VERY slow

Trench walls? You only need 1 layer of concrete. A wall you need at least 3-4, depending on how you do it. Do that around your base and you will need truckloads more rebar etc.
Below the concrete I just have 1 layer of upgraded woodblocks, its just to keep the glitching crawlers back untill they die.
Digging a 2deep/3 wide trench in dirt is a lot faster than making tons of rebar and concrete mix.

And concrete takes some time to obtain and make

You may as well build a concrete wall

Ok if you prefer to make 5 times as much rebar, then yes, might as well.

You can just replace it as you go, its easier all round

All good, I tried all and this is is by far the fastest and cheapest, thats my point. Plus I dont like walls if I can get a solid defense on groundlevel.
I'm about to try it with just woodblocks, as I noticed they dont even damage the concrete.

Honestly, I don't even bother with reinforced concrete anymore. Regular concrete blocks work just as well in most circumstances for me and are much more resource efficient.

Guys, I think all depends on what game settings you have.
If you got 200% harder blocks then even bircks could work.
If you got 50% softer blocks then reinforced concrete is a must.

Also remember that zeds got a bonus against wood and that policeman fatties can puke on your walls. IMO every solution discussed here has a good and a bad point.

Personally I don't like hiding in the ground if I can enjoy a nice view from my base.
I do dig underground tunnels for mining though.

Your all wrong its barbed wire around your base. but after that I perfer a trench. If they fall in they die if they dont then its easy to shoot them. Walls for me kinda get in the way of the shooting.

Isn't barbed wire still bugged? Last time I tried it did squat for damage and only served to really slow them down before they plowed through it.
