Simple, doesn't take much effort to setup other than wood, and it is effective.
I also usually have spent a half a day raiding bird nests to get eggs and feathers until I have 2+ stacks of arrows made in preparation.
If you don't plan to try building a horde base by day 7 (and I wouldn't bother wasting time doing that - you could be out looting) then any relatively solid POI for the first blood moon will do on the default game settings (or lower/easier). Some POIs benefit from placing bars like Venomir suggested, some don't need that. If the POI has flat walls and a flat roof, like some of the gas stations, you can stand on the top of the wall and fire down easily without the need for overhanging bars. Of course block off entrances and remove ladders so the zeds. can't easily get up to you. Drop some spikes in choke points to weaken zeds if you have the resources for that.
Have a planned escape route or two in case the zeds get up to you somehow.
Have lots of ammo for whatever ranged weapons that you have. Have some healing items ready on your hotbar. Molotovs are great for when the zeds bunch up. A coffee is nice to have in case you need to run a lot.
If you kill them quickly it's not too hard to run out of zeds on the first blood moon. Might happen on the 2nd and 3rd as well but after that it probably won't. The wiki has some details on how this works: https://7daystodie.fandom.com/wiki/Blood_Moon_Horde#How_Many_Zombies_Will_Spawn_At_Once?e
You can do the first two or three blood moons just out in the open. Depending on game settings and how lucky you get with looting.
Maybe 5 or 6 high with chutes I can throw pipe bombs down.
One or two atomic junkies make it really, really easy.
Doesn't work later due to po po puke, buzztards, and boomers, but in a pinch it works, especially when you drop onto your friend's game 30 minutes before nightfall on day 7.
Trader inventory refreshes periodically so they may not have the crucible if a refresh happened since your last visit. I believe they still refresh on every third day so it happens on day 4, 7, 10, etc.
For crafting, get a wrench and use it on gas pumps and street lights. Not the light pole, but the light at the top, you'll need to climb up.
Toss a point or two into Salvage Ops and you'll have a few hundred steel in no time.
