Is this actually an MMORPG in the making?
Considering the balance in the game, it's meant to punish the player severely.
  • You hunger and thirst beyond what any human are capable of.
  • Each hit from a zombie infects, and anything to cure infection is far off, thanks to leveled loot-lists.
  • You find stone age tools and weapons for the same reason in a world that should have an abundance of proper tools and weapons.
  • Stamina is consistent with an chubby person whose main diet consists of cheese doodles and cola.
  • Forges, workbenches and such requires schooling from mags strewn across the land. A whole lot of them are required to "level up". It sucks.
  • Everything suck so bad, because there is no way one can play this offline without using death as a panacea. So permadeath is off the table, for sure.

Just came back to test the game after a long hiatus, but I'm already tired of it.
I just want to mine in relative peace, but to do that I need a proper base and defenses.
I cannot get any defenses going as long as one is required to slog through the landscape while constantly going without stamina and a number of debuffs.
Quickest solution is to die to get home quick with the loot.

So silly.

Tip. Try adjusting the settings to make the game easier for you!
Because all of what you have said is a skill issue!

I did. Turned off zeds the first week.
Got achievement of surviving one bloodmoon with that...

Skill issue is not the case when you are forced to look around for the mags needed to get a workbench.

1, First thing you need to set up is a base, ignore quests, the rewards are just a waste of time. By base, I mean somewhere 2nd/3rd floor, at least, destroy all stairs, install a ladder.
2. Don't get hit. If you do get infected, then break tree stumps, they have a chance to drop honey, which cures infection. (You should make this one of your first tasks)
3. You find better tools, by looting. Nobody can forge metal, when dropped in the middle of nowhere.
4. Stamina is fine (except for gaming logic, running more than 20 metres wears you out)
5. How else would you prefer things to unlock, except for reading/learn while doing - the "learn while doing" is covered by speccing a particular line. Yeah, it's not perfect, but in an "RPG" what else would you suggest?
6. "ahem" get good. I only play solo/offline and get on just fine, pick a speciality, and stick to it. You don't have to cover all bases, you just need to specialise. pour your points into whatever line you fancy then INT to 4 (engineering and vehicles) and fortitude to 5 (farming) and you're all set. You can mix and match later in the game, when you have the points, but concentrating on AGI (pistols, bows, knives) or STR (shotgun/clubs) first is always a good start.

It's supposed to be hard, I remember my very first night, cowering in a tree house, wolf wandering about. It was horrible.

Bottom line is, it's a survival game, it's supposed to be challenging. You're supposed to think about survival, and you're supposed to be punished for failure.

Is this actually an MMORPG...

If, by Massive Multi-Player, you mean 8-ish Players working in co-co mode, then "No".
It is single-player, or co-op for small groups hosting their own dedicated or P2P server.

How DARE They Have:
* Survival in my Survival Game
* Dangerous Zombies in my Zombie Apocalypse Game
* Base Defense in my Base Defense Game...

Former Survivor - This is a Zombie Apocalypse Base Defense Survival Game...

To Survive - Git Gud, or just Feed the Zombies 'n Rant.
:steammocking:

I hear Stardew Valley can be Very Challenging to the "right player".

1) I always pick a decent house to set up base. I set up several and make tunnels far down between them. Also got underground roads to traders. But getting to the point where I need proper tools to get digging for real, it doesn't help just by doing,

2) I'm usually out of stamina at this point, so that's difficult.

3) Finding stone age tools is downright idiotic.

4) Long distances, always filled up inventory. Guess where my first points go...

5) Not by reading hundreds of mags, that's for sure. By doing is fine and very natural.
Having to read things to that degree is just ludicrous. Just tells what kind of idiot your avatar is,

6) Pretty sure I've gotten my feet wet from earlier alphas. Getting used to this is another matter.

I prefer the offline approach. But the tedious learning curve winds me up.

Then, perhaps, it's not the game for you. It's supposed to be hard, though it isn't actually that hard, once you work out the core mechanics. It's punishing, if you go in unprepared.

I have long thought that the core world generation could be transferred to all sorts of "world" games, and surprised some random leaching AAA publisher hasn't hoovered them up, Sure POIS are limited, but they add more and more each patch, the generation itself is spot on.

I last played A16. Before that I was building roads underground with A15 and had a blast. I "learned by doing", as it were, so tools and equipment was easier to achieve.

Unfortunately, now you're forced to loot everywhere just to get a heads up on several skills through the idiotic magazines and booklets.

Meanwhile I go through several bloodmoons with stone/iron tools and pipe weapons. The fact you get an option to make stone age armor and otherwise with "legendary parts" is downright stupid. Who in their right mind would use a legendary item together with grass and wood armor? Seriously?

Quite a few aspect of this game stinks now.

Ed:
Further, as you now level up with inferior weapons and equipment, the zombies become more powerful while you're stuck in the stone age. All loot are of inferior quality unless you put your scant points in looting, so yeah, I don't like this game any longer. I'd rather dig without any zombies henceforth.

"several blood moons" with stone tools/weapons? What are you spending your time doing?! Digging pointless tunnels?! (serious moment) maybe you're over exping on digging dirt (as odd as that appears to be) so not also gaining the books to keep up.

Loot man, just hit POIs, live dangerously for a bit, zombies only bite if you let them.

You only need legendary parts for tier 6 stuff, I will let you know now that there is little difference between a level 5 stone axe and a level 6 stone axe, so just save them up for later.

At this point, I think you're trolling for points.

so play a previous stable and never need to play with the current direction. 16.4 stable exists.

It's my preferred way to make highways for vehicles underground. So it's not pointless digging,
And what points?

Then you're mad, and this isn't the game for you.

I believe Red Faction 2 (2002) has plenty of pointless underground tunnelling, or modern-ish era, Minecraft.
