How far down can you dig?

Does anyone know if there is a layer of bedrock or some other type of impassible layer once you get to a certain depth?

So far the layers have been dirt, gravel, stone, iron, stone, stone, stone. Is there a deeper layer than stone?

Well, we have a tunnel at bedrock level right now, and nobody is getting stuck...

To know how far down bedrock is from you: Hit tilde '`' to open the comman line, type "listplayers" (no quotes) and that will give your position (IE "-500, 70, 788"). The center number (70 in this case) is your level up & down. Bedrock is at level 3.

Get an auger and at least 10 or 12 gas cans, a number of torches, & have a buddy ready with a bucket of water at ground level. Start digging straight down just one block wide until you hit bedrock, while every 7 or 10 blocks dig one or two blocks to the side and place a torch in that bubble. When you get to bedrock, dig at least three blocks up, and out to the side to make the start of a tunnel, then make sure to replace stone off of the bedrock level just in front of where you dug down so to leave a bit of a pit for the water to 'catch' in (otherwise it will flood your tunnel), then have your buddy pour the water in at the very top of the hole. The water will replicate all the way down and you can use that as a 'watervator' to go up & down.

Oh, it can take a while for the water to reach bedrock..

Well i just dig a hole, hit bedrock and ende up in the center of the earth. Just kept falling like forever. Single hole

did you dig thru the bedrock?

I've done it in multiplayer, so can't say if there's an SP bug..

Have seen no spawning at that depth.

Thanks, Wrathschild. Interesting concept with the watervator; I don't have an Auger, so I guess I'll keep using TNT until I reach it.
