Underground Farming?
Can you build farms underground, do torches provide enough light for crops to grow?

They used to, but that was "fixed". Only sunlight works now, and it has to come down straight to the plant from the sky. I think it will bypass glass panes, not sure what else.

Damn, my overground farm keeps getting trashed by zombies, even with a fence round it.:(

Till they fix it you just need to put glass panels a block or two above your plants to stop wabbits etc from spawning on the soil and also put over hangs up to stop spider zombies climbing up and walking all over your farm.

The main trick is not to build your farm area near your main base. If you are near the farm at night the mob spawn can wipe it out very easily. The spawn will be most heavy in an area around the player's location and around buildings of course.

Here is a screen of a failed farm attempt.

And a successful farm.

So you really don't need to go to all the trouble of building walls and glass roofs, there's a much simpler solution.

Basically you have to make a greenhouse and the animals and the zombies will not get in it. I made one and it looks pretty good. A point of intrest, it seems that you have to leave one tile missing on the roof or your plants will start popping up out of the ground. Take one tile out and it works just fine.

Thanks for the tips, I think I'll build it some distance from my base.

Tried building the farm away from my base but still gets destroyed. I guess I'm going to have to build a greenhouse...

This last one dead centre in my base took 4 or so game days, inside it has a snake pathway so i just run from one end to the other when i need to grab some corn for my auger.

It's a small farm granted, but this is the top of a 4 storey tower - nothing ever gets to my crops.

Depening on how big your building is, a rooftop farm can be a great option.

I built my personal farm at the top of a very tall tower, that gets larger as it goes up. Even if I'm up there at night the zeds don't pay much attention to me, and the reinforced concrete of the tower (2 thick) combined with the tree-tipped submerged moat and jumping-access only really confuses their AI. Took a while to build, but I consider it completely secure at this point, and really large for growing stuff.

Some great ideas, I hadn't thought of building in on stilts or roofs. Thanks guys I think I should be able to get somewhere with my farm.:)

When did they fix that? Last I checked on my game in Alpha 6 my UG garden with campfire light was still good! Haven't played in a bit though, holding off till 7 for now. No underground gardens are definitely a gamechanger. Though I'm just gonna move mine to the roof and hope you can disable those ridiculous bees in Alpha 7. Stupid ♥♥♥♥♥♥ bees......You know what ruins the atmosphere of a zombie apocalypse? Giant mutant bees. Romero would be turning in his grave!!!!

If he was dead that is :P

I still have the occasional problem with hornets, but I like the open-air feeling of my tower-top farm area. If I'm up there running around I can usually handle any if they come in a single shot. Sometimes there aren't any that notice me. You can of course opt to either raise the walls significantly high, or just add on a glass roof.

I was wondering about that, since campfires provide the same effect on zombie movement as daylight.

Edit: But I usually just elevate my farms and encase them in glass panes.
