Why do so many people live in the wasteland?
Like nearly every base I see is there in screenshots etc that seems like one of the worst places to live.

Flat ground, tons of iron just laying around, long sight distances for sniping zombies.... the list is long :)

i am not sure, but they have perharps less zombies there, i build always my base in a place they have green grass, more different beautiful tree in the north region, but they have more and more zombies,

by example, when i go out of my cave in the morning, it's take me the half of the day to kill the zombie they are in front of my entrance, just to be able to go out of the cave, so, neer no time to go take water and food,

but the small time i have tested the death region it's seem they have perharp less but not sure, it's just an impression...

yep. iron. cinder blocks to make concrete, trees to burn and melt the iron to make reinforced concrete.. etc etc. my be most who build in the wastelands don't have creative/build mode turned on, you don't have run so far for resources.

I build many bases. I started with my home base and as I move into new areas I build a new mini-base. I have built a few in the waste land and as a rule have found it a very depressing sort of place, though rich with iron and cinder blocks.

My rules for Under Ground Bases are as follows:-

(1) Always set up on a road with a hard surface. Nice and flat and usually Hard.
(2) Always ring the entrance with a minimum of 3 rows of spikes.
(3) Set a 3 high stone/concrete wall around the entrance
(4) set up torches around each side of the spikes and on top of your tower.
(5) dig straight down a minimum of 15 blocks
(6) leave torches every 4 or 5 blocks in the shaft.
(7) once at 15 or more blocks deep, then tunnell horizontally about 20 blocks following the road. This means that the Zed's will follow you and be far enough away that they will not destroy your defences around the entrance and the hard surface of the road means that they will not dig down very much.

I may also dig down to bedrock and set up a common room for casting and storage if I stay very long at the base.

I prefer to trench off one of the major bridges. If you stay in the middle, they seem to congregate in the river and spend all night jumping up at you but contacting nothing. As an aside, I haven't found any way to build/move anything that stores stuff.

the last time i have trying to live on a bridge, the zombies are in the river like you, and i have climb up to the top of the bridge to be sure the zombie don't go take me, i have walking on a big metal trust, the trust have broke under my feet, i go down directly on the bridge floor, ouch!!!, i replace my head, begin to walk, and the floor of the bridge go down with me on it, and i fall in the river...

no need to replace my head this time because the zombies have eating it Ha Ha Ha...

We always build in the center of a lake (normally Spillway). Cross pattern 5 block to start, dig out the center, branch off for first room, and either block off the entrance or fill it with water (bottom of shaft 1 block lower than your floor) They can't hit water, and won't go below the first block of water. Just built a variation of the Mines of Moria at the bedrock level for fun (and resources)

Seems to be less zombies

I love gravetown, simply because of its "fallout like" atmosphere.

I tried to build base near the center of the playable map, this would be in the burnt forest region. There are plenty of deer and bunny spawns in this area which provide a food source, in fact they make farming in this area pretty difficult. I have an access stairway under one of the bridges, the entrance doesn't really need to be defended. The stairs go all the way down to the bedrock level which gets you far outside the zombies detection radius, so they do not swarm after you. From this location I can dig tunnels to the various areas that I want to explore, by traveling underground in the safety of tunnels. I am only going outside during the daytime hours, digging during the night hours.

You don't have to live in the wasteland. I went out and started something again to show it...

It's a short one. The other time I built one, I put it 9 high vs just 7.
