Disappearing Backpacks
I believe many would agree that backpacks disappearing upon an unfortunate death could be considered a game breaking bug.

When I say, 'unfortunate deaths,' I am referring to times where a player dies next to a backpack, the backpack stacks on the backpack and it collapses.

Another instance is where a player jumps when fighting a bear, the bear hits said player and stuns, the player slowly floats to the ground while stunned, but when coming into contact with the ground, the player breaks their leg (due to the stun?). The bear hits the player again and they die. The bear continues hitting the dead body of the player while the server prepares to respawn them, and the bear destroys the dropped backpack.

After falling off a roof and dying from ground impact, the backpack vanishes.

The only time I can understand when a backpack is destroyed upon death is death from explosion.

Another steam user named Whiplash, or WhiplashGames recommended that dropped backpacks only be respawned on world generated terrain. I believe that this is a great idea, and could prevent many of the above issues. If some sort of system could be added that calculates the nearest 'safe block' (on world generated terrain), then perhaps this game breaking bug can finally be rid of.

Oh wow.. thanks for the shout out. ya, most often time I lose a backpack is when it appears on gore blocks, or on spikes, or other man made blocks.. espeically fragile ones. Seeing as a backpack gets destroyed by falling, it seems to make the most sense to generate them on ground that is secure and solid, more than fragile blocks.

backpacks dropped via drop on quit are immune to blocks like chairs beds garbage etc, it spawns on them but doesnt reak like any other blocks would, so get your ♥♥♥♥ together devs

I recently got caught in a corner by zeds and tried to make an escape by jumping over them. Lo and behold I die in mid-air. Dying is fine by me, but even though my body disappeared to get respawned, my backpack was still up in the air. When it landed it exploded leaving nothing but depressed memories of all the good+ loot I had just gained. I think that backpacks should at least be immune to fall damage like some blocks or should respawn to where the player last left the ground in mid-jump. In certain servers this is a game-breaking feature that I for one would like to see abolished. :steamsad:

I admit that it is a pretty big bug that really should get fixed, but the term 'game-breaking' is a bit much. The game is very playable with this bug, just very depressing when it happens.

I just died to a Dog in a Building, and even though the Backpack Icon is there, the back pack is not, it appears to be in the wall or floor, but I have no tools now to see if it is or not.

its Pi$%^d me off enough to think about starting a new.

I have 584 hours in the game, but I feel the game was much more fun about 30 patches back.

Did you check the roof? That happens all the time where a back pack just ends up in stupid places, usually up high. I lost one yesterday in a tree. I prolly shoulda just used wood frames to get up to it. Instead I cut down the tree.. rolled the dice came up snake eyes lol

I actually recently dicovered this bug. I was running away from two zeds into my cave, got hit and stunned, floated down a couple of blocks, broke both my legs and shortly died. Backpack fell and broke again. Very depressing.

SUPER game breaking to have your backpacks just up and vanish.. I've lost 3 full loads because of this crap

I died in a building, ran back, and its gone.. 3 different times ><

I'd be happy if they removed dropped backpacks completely. Make the game harder in some other way or levy some other death penalty. It's not a necessary mechanism.

How about when you die, you spawn a feral that looks like you, is keyed to you only and hunts you down!

Yeah but you can die by quite a few really stupid in game bugs, I chopped down a tree yesterday, and was no where near it, I instantly died, " not a fan of the new tree animation ".

I have chopped out a plank covering a window and have the whole building colllapse on me, in a way the game appears to be going backwards, they keep making things harder every which way you turn, pretty soon Water Jars will have locks on them that you need to hit 100 times with a pick to break :)))))).

Too lazy to look for a more recent thread, but I've had 3 or 4 backpacks disappear with 14.5. I died in a cave with my back to a wall. Zombies were falling in through a hole in the roof. There was nowhere for me to run. After I came back, instead of going directly there, I took my time, making new weapons, armor, bow, etc... When I went back to cave, zombies were gone as well as the backpack. I'm wondering if the "chunks" reset after a time to save on memory or something.... Couldn't backpacks fall into an exception to this reset? And also, consider putting an armor value of 1000 or more on the backpack to help prevent accidental destruction.

Locking this as the mechanics for backpacks are completely different from when this post was made. As such the new posting is completely irrelevant to this thread.
