How to get a stone without pickaxe?

Obviously for the forge, without forge I have no pickaxe and don't tell only way is to find pickaxe in loot, that would be very ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

You should really look for the tools store and loot it. That's what all players really do. I've looted the first one in my current playthrough yesterday and got two pickaxes and two wood axes. Easy- peasy.

Have you discovered when you attack a crate in a tool store, that you can open them and get items out of them yet? This would go a long way towards explaining why you have not found any so far if not. This also works in the gun stores.

If you have found enough gunpowder, you can make explosives and blast some stone out unless they changed the drop to rubble or something. Can't play Alpha 12 because of the memory leak issues. I'm still stuck on Alpha 11.6.

Use the stone axe to break down boulders for small stones. Pick up small stones from the ground. There are rock outcroppings that drop stones that can be broken down into small stones as well as proviging the 'stones' you need.

the zeds like to pick fights with the new rock outcrops, dont interfere and just let them mine it for you, nip in and pick up stone, also if you see one thats taken damage its likely to have some partially broken stones that only needs a hit or 3 to break, failing this smash the crap out of it with ya stoneaxe

Okay, forge went from 9 small rocks, a bone shiv (sarcasm), and a short metal pipe... to having to learn leathercraft, 2 clay, 3 "stones" I still haven't found using 3 pickaxes, a total of 2 short steel pipe, and bellows (I've got that much). On day 10, just dinged level 5. Destroyed rock, cobblestone, gravel, none of these work. Are you serious that we have to use stone axes to find these rocks, pickaxe doesn't work? I'm at 196 small rocks now looking for this ingredient. To make a crossbow, what used to be the first weapon in the game. The bow is garbage.

The bow is my favorite weapon. Once you have the weapon down in terms of skill, you can take down a lot of zeds, provided you have the ammo.

You sir are confuzzeld as to what you need to do here. The bellows use hides, hides are what you get before you make leather. Thus no leather book is required. Stone is found under the sand or soil, but also there are large chunks of stone in the plains biome above ground. I am NOT speaking of the resource rocks you get small stone and iron from. The stone is more beige and less gray than these boulders that you cannot get stone from. A pick axe is the best way to mine the stone. A stone axe works but a pick axe is superior to that. You will not get stone from any other sources. A quick way to access stone that is under you if you are not in a biome where it is found on the surface (ie the desert) is to go in a cave and travel down to the layers of stone below.

Also the bow is great you need to learn how to use it and then you will understand. Hint do not aim it using the crosshair expecting the arrow to fly straight ;)

Ahh, ok OP I found the forest biome a good place to knock off stone you will see them.
