Building with Cobblestone
Last night I built a small "base" consisting of a 7x7 wall made of Cobblestone. It's 4 blocks high and has a dirt floor. When I went to put a roof on it, I could not get the frames to stick properly. One frame would stick, but if I added a second frame they would both fall off.

I tried to stick both cobble frames and wood frames to the walls, but in both cases adding a second frame would make them fall.

(there are no caves beneath this structure, it is nowhere near a cave)

In the past (a10 and a11), I've taken over a brick prefab and just added spikes and a catwalk around the perimeter, done. This is the first totally free standing structure I've tried to build. Any idea what the problem is?

Did you dig down to stone or just build it ontop of the dirt?

I built on top of dirt (those are the DDDD in the lovely diagram).

It's possible that you have a cave system under you somewhere causing the second block to fall down.

It is simple.
You need to put the wood frame as ceiling all the way.
No cobblestone in the top layer.

Cobblestone has almost no "max load".

I have heard this before, but wouldn't this work then?

Or do different materials behave differently when placed as ceilings/floors?

Cobblestone can almost not sustain horizontal block. (1 block at most)

OK thank you!
What is the best flooring material for spanning long gaps, wood? trestle? concrete?

Well dirt is not the most stable base to start on. When the base is less stable the higher you go the more unstable and prone to collapse it becomes. It's best to dig the dirt out and start from stone, and always make sure the base can support what is above. Building materials are the other factor as each type has it's own load capacity and number of blocks you can attach before they break off under thier own weight.

i put trussing at the top, this can support floor space of 8x8(not tried bigger)

You could fill in the whole floor under you but the main support walls are what is most neccessary. Bonus is they can't undermine you so easily.

i dont personally go to stone, i lay a 11x11 concrete block foundation and then build columns and sit my house on them, the area underneath is my spike trap, works very well indeed
