Any tips on hunting them down? Or do I just need to be paying attention to the drops?
Also if you find a crate and log out then back in the crate will despawn. However nonfound crates will not do this until they have been rendered, this can be a pain if you walk into the chunk a crate is and log out and cannot locate it as it was in same chunk as you but despawned due to log out.
Airdrops only start after day one, they sometimes don't sound off so you can go without hearing an airplane. Sometimes you can get multiple planes and up to three crates per run.
I'd say "yes" because that's how it worked but I haven't proven that yet with the latest build.
I've run and exited the game several times this weekend and i've got about 6-8 crates laying around.
It's a pretty safe bet that they don't depawn.
xlockeed's condition about being near one when exiting makes sense also.
Remember to look up once in a while since crates can land anywhere, on top of buildings. in trees...on your head.

Yes, they will stay there until you find them, but they will stop putting up orange smoke after a set amount of time OR until you enter the same map chunk as it. There is a limit to the number of unopened drop crates that can exist in the world at once, so when you hit that limit, air drops will stop until you open some of them.
Most of the tweaks right now are for the RWG map which has no radiation zones, so I wouldn't look for the radiation drop bug to get fixed anytime soon.
