Zombies see through walls
I buld a House out of Wood. I even build a cobblestone Wall arround. But the zombies sense me sometimes it says for one second hunt and than undetected and attack walls. (I have no food in my pocked that smells) I had to kill all hordes that came so far (or run away from my shelter)

Yeah, they are moving away from "build a safe place" apparnetly...... 7DTD will no longer be a survival game, it will just be another boring shooter.

My first night, I crouched on a rooftop, nothing in my inventory, no light sources, no noise..... and a horde made a B-line to me and tore the building down, all while flashing <hunted> and <undetected>

Game breaker, I'll go play something else until they fix it :P

Yeah seems to be a bug! Hope it will be fixed fast!

well today i was playing on a serer when out of nowhere 50 zombies appeard is that normal? i hid in my bunker and they ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ broke trough 30 blocks

Darn it! Haven't played 8.2 yet, but I was hoping they'd have fixed some of the AI quirks. Often when I crouched down the stairs in the morning, my status would change to "Hunted" for a fraction of a second. Zeds would often attack a structure even when they didn't sense me. And they'd often attack a wall when I was standing a few blocks away. Maybe I'll play with spawning set to very low again...

maybe it is to do with the new "feral" setting and it is messing with "normal" as well
It seems that lots of people have different problems ... I "used" to have problems with hordes at my door every night, and being detected even when 40+ blocks underground .... Now, It's like I have none of these problems but other people do ....

I'm starting to wonder if it's actually specific settings that are chosen that give these bugs ... I've only played one day so far since 8.2 patch, but Living out in the forest inside a small wooden 10x10 blocked house I've had no problems being detected ... I was even outside some of the night hacking down trees with zombies around ... Maybe its the "difficulty" level, making the zombies more perceptive? ...

Same to me with every horde!

Zombies on Feral can intentionally find you anywhere. That's what the mode is for.

I have never had any issue avoiding detection.

Worst case scenario, build in the middle of the big lake and zombies wont even spawn near you.

The reason hordes head in your direction is because they have to head somewhere. The only way really to direct where they go is to use the player's location and have them head in that direction. They don't travel the entire map, only the chunk that the player is currently at. There really isn't any other coordinate to fee the hordes to direct them other than this.

The randoms, on the other hand, are spawned NEAR the player but only randomly wander. Perhaps the player location is used as a semi-random area to move around in. But for the most part, they just wander where they spawn, probably in an enlarging circle.

From what I've seen, since 8.0, they CAN see you underground IF you have torches or a light source. If I collect all of my torches in the area I happen to be in underground, they calm down, continue swiping at the ground for a bit, then move on. I'm also starting to wonder if its not also this way in your base if you have any sort of lighting.

As long as you use a keystone block, they won't completely destroy your base. Just go out the next morning and rebuild a few blocks. Its not like your whole base comes tumbling down. I like to put a keystone under each corner of the building.

Do the keystones have any effect in singleplayer?

I haven't seen this. Remember that just because they are attacking your stuff doesn't mean they know you are there. They just attack anything that gets in their way.

If they glitch through a wall they are attacking they can spot you, if that's what you meant, like when their head goes through the solid wall while they are beating on it.

The first half of what you said is right.

Zombies do not see or care about light sources at all. It slows them down, but they do not register that a light is there. You can even sneak up behind a zombie while holding a torch or flashlight, they wont turn and react when the light shines on them. Nor do they react to placed torchs.

Keystones protect blocks from being damaged by players in PvP. I don't believe they do anything in PvE. A few destroyed blocks wont collapse most structures, they are pretty sturdy.

Well I mean I'm positive they don't detect light, I always light up my bases and have never had a problem. I assume it's intentional, I mean you use the light to fight the zombies, they are weakened by it, so it makes sense to light an area up, and it would be strange if that also gave you away. Also it would be weird if they were drawn to lights, as they'd do stupid things like follow the sun or the moon all the time, or stand under street lights staring up. I haven't read any dev comments on it.

I once flicked my mining helmet light at an unaware spider zed who was facing away, and it was immediately alerted to my presence.
Also, once I put a few torches around the perimeter of my temporary shelter, and the few that spawned seemed drawn to them. But some nights are more quiet than others, so would have to do some more testing.
There's no electricity, so no street lights. The sun is not a single light source that stands out in the dark. They could very well be following the moon in the absence of bigger distractions, such as loud noises and smells. And foil balloons :P

One of the devs said something like they hadn't had time to fine-tune how zeds respond to light. I thought it meant that running in artificial light is a bug or unintentional consequence that is meant to be fixed.

In 7.7 or 7.8, I'd sometimes see a horde on the other side of the river, walking along it. Or even in the river. So they weren't always going straight through my base.

Correct. I don't think they make a beeline for the player's location, its just used as a reference for the direction the horde should travel. Probably random with the player's location used as a 'seed' of sorts. I was out in Spillway waiting for the airdrop and next thing you know, here comes a horde wading my way. My base was nowhere near here, just lil' old me.

Somehow, the z's ARE able to see through walls as well as ground. I'll be crouched in my 10x10 building with no windows and the eye goes wide with me just sitting there.
