pick it up from the ground you can use a stone axe until you get a pick axe and break down the many stone piles all around the random map make a forge you now need to make a bellows and stone with iron pipe

you can either find a pickaxe by looting or use a stoneaxe. you find it by just digging down, you cannot get it from boulders though

destroyed like 50 boulders and there is only small stone and iron fragments
there is no stone laying on the ground... for me at least
aaaand i can't loot those houses with iron door with only stone axe, it takes like 1h for one door

the dark grey boulders will give you small stones and iron fragments. the other larger "stone" you can find either by chopping at the large mounds of whitish colored stone (easily found sticking up from the ground in forest areas), or digging down below the dirt in just about any area (other than desert, which has a lot of "sandstone")

hope that helps

Search for a NON DESERT biome.. any, doesnt matter but NO DESERT.
Then dig down and after 3 - 6 blocks dirt u will find grey stone. 3 of them and u got the base material for ur forge.
If u stay in desert, dig down...oh well... VERY deep, not sure, 20 - 30 blocks and u will find grey stone there, but with low tools, stoneaxe / stoneshovel, it might need some time.

Sebbe lugna ner dig.. ;) .. Use sticks and 4 small stones to build a stone shovel. Use the shovel to dig into the ground (not more than 5-6 blocks and NOT in the desert) until you hit stone. You can dig earth/sand with a stone axe too but stone shovel is more effective. This game is very much about using the right tool in the right place.

Once you have reached the stone layer use the stone axe on this stone ground and you will get the large stones. If you are in the desert search for the large desert formations that are thick and wide (NOT the high and pointy!) - at their base you will normaly be able to dig for stone.

If you are in the forrest biome you will see rocks sticking out of the ground. Whack them with your puny axe. Yes, it will take time, but this is a survival game and it's mega hard at the beginning.

every biome (except dessert) dig deep enough till you reach stone or find a nice cave will do the trick

desert has plenty of stone, its just 20 or so blocks down

You can also find it in the large stone outcrops (forest biome, not the boulders.. the large rock protrusions) and exposed cliff faces in many areas. Easier than digging down. It's pretty much everywhere when you know what to look for.

Some screen shots.. In this first shot, all the small grey blotches on the map represent stone outcroppings:

You can dig down literally anywhere to find stone. It's usually 20 blocks down. Use a shovel to dig dirt/sand and use a stone axe to dig up stone. It takes awhile but it's there.

Folks, he's asking how to get the tools necessary to MINE the stone.

Collect small rocks on the ground, a pipe and kill some animals. You need to turn the hides (Not leather! Hides!) into bellows. Then, use the bellows, small stones and pipe to make a forge. Smelt scrap iron down into bars. Use bars to make pickaxe. Then, you profit!

*edit*
So, I myself apparently mucked up here. I know it's a bump, but I wanted to correct myself. You need 3 stones for the forge, which is what was being asked for. Well, here's what you do for stone.

Obviously, if you find a working stiffs or car you may get a pickaxe. That is the easy approach, but depends on rng. Another thing you can do is either get an oil barrel or craft some TNT. TNT is somewhat expensive, but not that hard to get in the long run. Make sure you collect the bits of gunpowder you get from looting zombies and buildings.

9x gunpowder = 1x Gunpowder Charge
63x gunpowder = 7x Gunpowder Charge
1x book = 20x paper
TNT = 7x Gunpowder charges, 1x plant fibre and 13x paper
(the yield is one)

You then take two wooden planks and a small iron pipe to make a blunderbuss. Cheap ammo is 1x gunpowder, 1x small stone and 1x paper. Go find a stone "pillar" out and about and place the oil barrel or TNT on top of it and then take your blunderbus and shoot it. It's another RNG based thing, but you can end up with a decent bit of stone doing so. (Assuming it doesn't get destroyed)

... .... .... ... ... Or, you could do the REAL easy thing and just smack some stone with a (tested with poor quality) stone axe 22x (literally 22 times. I tested on 100% block durability) and mine it that way. Yup, 22 hits with a stone axe will "mine" stone. It's a pain, but you only need 3 in the end. Personally, I like the TNT/Oil barrel version (which is why I said it first) but realistically all you need is to smack some stone 66 total times. TNT/Oil drums go boom - I like boom.

Hope that helps. I will actually be adding it to my guide later as well.

Pretty sure they figured that out over the past 5-1/2 years. But congrats on winning the 2021 Necro-post award!
