Looking for Clay in the desert!
Pretty much that :D I spawned in a desert biome and so far all I can see anywhere I have been is more desert. I need clay clearly to make molds and things as I have gathered a fair amount of resources now and am in need of a pickaxe and a glass jar mold. Any ideas of the best way to find clay when stuck in a desert? All I've found so far is a lot of sandstone and sand!

You can try and mix 2 cornmeal with water. It'll give you 10 clay

That would require finding corn first. :D

dark orange, bronzish color - and now RNG can mix in small patches of biomes into other biomes with flowers usually in those mini biomes there is some clay to be found too. But if you dont have such then simply you will have to find plains to get corn or other biome to get clay otherwise

^this. I had the same problem yesterday. I found the forge book on day one and spent the time normally searching for that book now searching for clay lol.

If you look on your map, it'll be the darker colored areas, similar to water. Almost looks wet as you walk across it.

Try around any water pools you find. You may have to dig a bit.

I looked all around day 6 and couldn't find any!

In any case, now there is a zombie horde in my abode killing me over and over again so I give up. Next time I spawn in the desert I'm restarting!

Hmm I love the desert though. It's open and you have a clear view all around. Maybe it's just an unlucky seed? I used Longhorned as a seed and I spawned between 2 cities and on the border of a forest and desert biome with all recourses at hand. Seriously I never had this much recourses before.

It does seem to be a bad seed. Although there was plenty of water holes around there was a serious lack of clay. All I could find was some fertile soil near one of the larger water holes and in a hilly area.

There was a small town with a few houses in it and then a couple of other houses scattered around. Plenty of wood and Aloe plants. The fruit from the catus kept me going for food for a bit at least and I had no shortage of water.

What I wasn't expecting so soon not having played in this build until now was the fact that the Zombies made a beeline for me no matter how quiet I was at home and the horde was full of zombie dogs. Nasty. If I had of realised that I would have simply placed lights everywhere so I could see what the heck I was doing, instead I was in the dark.

Live and Learn. Time to reroll and hope I end up some place a little nicer.

Sadly, this is probably your best bet.

Sometimes the seed generation isn't that great, whereas other times it's remarkably fun. They've done a lot of work with trying to fix the "randomness" of the points of interest (for example) and that's absolutely necessary. The byproduct is sometimes you get a seed that's pretty much hopeless to play.

If you're not "feeling it" by Day 3 or 4 I'd suggest just abandoning it and starting anew. Unless you're wanting an intentionally difficult experience for that run.

You can often times find cornmeal in cabinets at POI's. You do not always have to find corn 1st.

Clay doesn't occur in the desert proper, only in sub-biomes strewn across it, they can be identified as orangey brown patches on the map. They are usually pretty common, but it is annoying that they sometimes don't pop up for many, many miles however....
Oddly, corn can also be grown in sand if you find seeds.

Clay is everywhere in RG so is the Desert it seems. Open your map and Zoom in to get the finest detail. I bet you'll find a Dark orangey spot not far from your current location. Move to dark spot and you should dig up clay. If not then repeat only this time move to a different colored dark spot on the map. One of them will be Clay. Once you find it you'll realize that it's all over the place when you look at the map closely.
