1. Some base designs allow for safe ways to reach and repair the electric fences.
2. If you focus kill the cops, they don't explode.
3. If it's their range attack, place your fences behind some protection and certainly not in the direct line of sight of cops trying to hit you.
4. Fences get a bit of damage each time they're activated, they won't be able to endure an entire horde night without repairs, so I often use switches to only activate them when needed.
Nor do they have to be at the same level as the zombos. The line just has to intersect with their pathing.
On the odd occasion I use them, there's usually a few lines the zombos have to pass through since I can't repair them from my spot. Like Mith, I usually have them on switches.
One of the kings of compact electric blender (blade and fence) horde fighters you could repair was Grand Spartan. And they're still valid bases today.
it is a 5x7 interior base, with a hallway running down the middle with solid block walls (not bars). The killing corridor is 1 block wide and 4 blocks long.
This leaves a 1 block wide short corridor on either side of the hallway, and that is where I put the fences. That way the wires go through the walls and cross the hallway but the posts are safe in the side corridors which means not only are they safe from attack but I can repair them without having to expose myself to an attack. I tend to keep the hallway fairly short since I want to be able to reach all the fence posts to repair them. If the corridor is too long you may get shocked by your own fences trying to reach the posts at the far end to repair them.
The end of the hallway I use bar shapes and that is where I fight. I place the door to the right so I can easily repair that as well without having to move, plus it allows me to shoot straight down the corridor without hitting anything but zombies once I get a gun. I can basically stand at the end fighting and repair the door and end fence posts without moving more than 1m.
For the fences I use varying height by placing them on walls as well as the floor. This lets me catch any zombies that pile up or crawl.
