Placing chests on any road is safe also.
Zombies can sometimes aggro vehicle if their pathing derps and they can explode.
And to mark them, open the map, use the mouse wheel to zoom in, then right click to place a waypoint.
But it's obviously not recommended as mentioned above.
So, all in all, it should be about as safe (if not safer due to the massive HP of the ambulance) as just plopping your own storage chests down.
