What? You DONT!?
You will need a giant runway above your base or at least nearby lol.
Probably more effective to build a Highway across two points and travel over the wilderness with it.
I don't think zombies spawns in midair on your blocks right?
I still havent tested if zombies do spawn on player placed blocks, so making a large 102x102 block area for a floor using the 3x3x1 blocks might be viable.
That is because it isn't a Helicopter. It is a Gyrocopter. Clue is in the name. On that part, it handles pretty well for a game not based on aviation.
And it flies exactly like a gyrocopter should- Which is basically like a plane but not quite.
The blades on top are NOT under heavy power; They're powered enough to create something akin to a planes wings through rotation; Allowing it to be incredibly light compared to a traditional plane. Lift is achieved through forward momentum causing air flow over the blades like a plane; NOT through rotation of the blades the way a helicopter does.
Gyro copters are the real life predecessor to helicopters. and it controls almost identically to a real life gyro copter.
So if you don´t wanna be stuck with the same two or three T5 POI´s that are near you, there is a lot of purpose for a gyrocopter.
Also landing on rooftops for easy access to loot. If you are trained you need just a few blocks to land it.
That said I sometimes start a map by spawning a gyro at my initial spawn point. I imagine I'm a pilot who was overflying the area on a mission and ran out of gas. I can only fly again when I gather or manufacture more gas.
Makes for an interesting alternative to the usual new game startup.
Awesome roleplay. I love that scenario.
best way for exploring... or hoping city to city... and you can fit a 4x4 or motorcycle inside one... lol.

I could visit 4 traders a day with a truck or motorcycle, maybe even 5 if I rushed. Using the gyrocopter, I can visit all 7 in my world with like 5 hours of daylight to spare. Not having to deal with winding roads, rivers or lakes, destroyed biome obstacles, or mountains makes it so much faster and easier.
Please no... The gyro flies like it is supposed to (as pointed out numerous times), and it most definitely does not require a giant runway by any means, once you know what you are doing. I think most people just get the "this thing doesn't fly like a heli or a plane" mentality, and move on, never developing the feel for how it handles. Because, no it does not handle like a heli or a plane, it handles like a gyrocopter, which fits somewhere between those 2 types of vehicles.
I can drop the gyro down on a tiny patch of area, it's just all about understanding the handling and forward speed vs lift generated. Taking off can also be done in a very short area vs a plane - I typically build a very small rooftop runway on my base for taking off, about 20 blocks long at most is all I need. It also doubles as a landing zone, and I throw a few lights on it (usually torches early on) to guide my approach when returning to base.
