are turrets worth it?
so I was reading about the robot turret skill and the fact is has "only the closet turret will be active" makes me question "then why add them" if I am going to place turrets I am placing them so that I can defend my base from multiple locations having the ones near my defetes the whole reason for turrets

OMG they are SO worth it !!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep in mind we play with the Darkness falls mod but im sure its the same in vanilla.

With perks you can have 3 " active ata time " 1 sledge and 2 junk is devastating to the bad guys.

You can set up as many areas 4 defence as you want to retreat/advance to. EACH seperate area can have 3 turrets and as many areas as you want to build turrets for.

If on blood moon night your primary fighting position is becoming unsafe then run back to a back up location with the 3 turrets already set up and the will become active the second you are in range.

For POI's set up the sledge at chokepoints and go wake up everyone then run back past your turret { for some odd reason you clip through them } and then let it pound the bad guys while you shoot over it at the stunned enemies laying on the ground or turret blocked from getting through the doorway.

I cant count the number of times they have saved my ass.

In vanilla there are 2 types of turrets, robotic and powered. You can have as many smg and shotgun turrets as you can power with generators or battery banks, but the robotic turrets you can place anywhere and dont require power, but you can only have 1-2 active at the same time and you cant get too far from them

The powered ones sounds exactly like what the OP is looking for.

Sounds like you are looking for electric turrets for your base. Electric turrets and robotic turrets are two different things.

Electric turrets are crafted using the Advanced Engineering perk, and are a placeable trap block that is semi-permanent. Robotic turrets are personal weapons crafted using the robotics perk, that you can take with you anywhere. Both are extremely powerful, arguably OP.

Electric (engineering) Turret
-------------------------------------
Advantages -
You can have as many active as you want (as long as you have ammo and electricity for them)

Disadvantages -
Uses expensive gunpowder type ammo
Requires a connection to an electricity source
Cannot be picked up again unless you have an active land claim block in range

Robotic turret
---------------------
Advantages -
Uses super cheap ammo that can be crafted on the fly anywhere without any workstations
Can be placed and picked up again any time without a land claim block
Can use weapon mods just like other type of guns
Can be used as a gun, by holding the turret and pressing your fire key
Gets better with added perk levels

Disadvantages
can only have a maximum of two active at a time

I see yeah this was exactly what was confusing me. I was looking for turrets that defended my base with out me being there to keep random hoards from breaking my base. so the idea they would only work when I was near and only when close to me made no sense. I am guessing the robotic turret is more of a mobile engineer style

Another detail to consider with Robotic Turrets is that while you can only have 2 active at a time, they automatically deactivate themselves (point their barrel down) when they run out of ammo. One way to use them is to place down about 4 nearby, so when the 2 near you deactivate the next 2 activate (you have time to reload and replace the first 2).
