Easiest way to get animal hides?

I've been running around killing pigs and stag but never get any hide...been doing it for hours and it seems the only hide I ever get are from insanely hard to kill bears that kill you in a stun...Are bears the only way to get hide or is RNG ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with me?

Need ot use a sharp blade like bone shiv on animals to get hide

Need to use a sharp blade to gut the animals. You will get hide from it. So the best thing to make at first is the bone shiv I think its called.
