Is there a knack to placing water in a moat?
Ok maybe a stupid question :) but is there a knack to placin water in your moat?

Ive started throwing my buckets down and watching the water spread a little. However certain blocks are missing and it seems very slow to fill.

Plus I get stuck in the water alot, which isnt good as I have spikes on the base lol,

Thanks again

Moats are bad, Mkay, moats are bad, really though moats are not a really good defence & hazardess to you basement if you have one. Leave the area it might fill up when you get back but I think they changed the mechanics of water a little. If you break a water tower open it does not travel very far.

I would fill the trench you made with trunk spikes & you can get rid of the water by placing blocks.

And water physics are being reworked for A13 so what works today (or mostly doesn't) won't apply in the next alpha build.

But most of the good house builds ive watched on youtube had moats. So they are bad now?

They are not very efficient as a defense but they are still beautiful.
I think people still build them for aesthetic reasons.

Zeds don't breathe, hence they don't drown either. But if they beat their way through the walls of your moat into your base the water can (at present) destroy your chests.

They slow down zombies, and can keep them on spikes longer, and water removes gore blocks...

That said, they just tend to be a huge pain as zombies will start digging tunnels through your moat, cause all kinds of trouble and repairs...

Not to mention going through and cleaning up random tunnels after a horde is dangerous.

I think people dont really look at the big picture, they just see them, think they are cool, and then continue to try to find ways to take advantage of them and mitigate their flaws.

Log Spikes were a bit more OP before 12, and the moat just functioned to clean spikes, but with a VERY simple design you could drop the moat, and the spikes would get cleaned by zombies breaking through gore blocks to get to your wall...

gore blocks severly declined moats defensive capabilities since the gore will displace water and give zeds a chance to climb out on the other side and it will happen quickly if 5-10+ zeds will fall into it so it will slow down the horde for a moment yes , will it kill smaller hordes ? probably yes, but nowadays it will be a nightmare to maintain - first to remove the gore , also remember that now you HAVE to repair Log spikes too which can be troublesome at best now imagine doing the same in the partially filled with water moat - you wont se whats damaged what isnt, traveling along the moat is dangerous and will displace water (if you decide to put some frames to stand on) and that will add to your last chore - REFILLING the moat - So depending on size, depth , complexity it might take you a whole day - a day you might spend on other things than repairing the moat :L But yes they still do look beautifull :) and they still are quite ok defence - once they were AWESOME almost unbeatable defence - now well now they will do but ultimately there are better and less time consuming methods of defence. and trust me - if you go for the moat you will die plenty of times due to mishaps during repair - trust me i know that from first hand :G

Lol yes.

"Okay the horde is cleared but now comes the difficult and dangerous part. Repairing the spikes."

One thing about the moats, if a zed dies in the moat and a gore bloc gets created, with the way the water system currently is, you'll end up getting small spots here and there where there is no water but it's still completely surrounded by other water blocks and it's a pain to have to refill that block (s) in again.
I use water, in my moats, because it clears up corpses, as soon as they start to decay, before they can turn into gore blocks, so zombies can't climb out. It's a little buggy, though. On occasion, the gore blocks will turn into invulnerable blocks that can't be attacked, but can be walked on. You have to re-do the water to fix that.

I expect that this usage will disappear in A13, though, when water no longer destroys things. Though, I agree - the water moats just look great =D.
