Is it better to repair a tool or just craft new one?
Which one saves you resources? For example pickaxe?

You need 4 iron ingots to make pickaxe
4 ingots ->16 (4*4) forged iron -> 48 (16*3) iron pipes -> 240 (48*5) strips
each strip gives you 10 durability, so from 4 ingots you get 2400 durability? meaning its almost five times better to just repair your tools?

is my math right? this is pretty important :D

i dont know i never repair a tool i just make a new one

you can repair a stone axe that is almost destroyed back to full life using a single iron ingot (results in 60 metal strips). It costs 4 iron ingots to make a new one. It is totally worth it.

i dont know the exact numbers but yes its better to repair a tool. If a pickaxe is down to 1% it takes about 2 ingots to repair it vs 4 to make a new one.

ok so it is better to repair

Definitely better to repair your iron tools.

no no no. it will only take on ingot to craft 60 metal strips. using 50 strips will repair your pickaxe back up to the fulll 500 leaving you with 10 strips left. so knowing this, definately repair, do not recraft

Yeah recrafting is definately less effective for iron tools. Stone axes need small stones and those are only one needed to recraft so its better to just make a new one, same with things like crossbows. Its just the tools that use metal strips in most cases that you shouldn't recraft.

I repair mine, other then when I am busy chipping away and then suddenly my tool breaks. Oops. :D

Just wanted to offer a different viewpoint on repairing the stone axe. Even though it only takes one stone to make a stone axe you also have to craft it into a sharp stone and craft a plant fiber from grass. The whole process takes a lot longer and is a bigger hastle than sticking your stack of small stones next to your worn stone axe and hitting craft. Even though it uses more stone the process is faster and simpler and worth it in my opinion. Small stones are abundant.
Same is true of repairing the crossbow. Uses more sticks but it is easy and fast.

Iron tools should be repaired at durability 250. 25 strips. Stone tools are a joke to repair when some of them are so cheap to make.

In short -
Iron - Repair at 250
Stone - do whatever fits your fancy
nice to actually see a nice concensus on this. Would have expected rants against either method but instead some basic math and we're done regarding the types of tools.

My tendency to already be carrying handfulls of fibre at all time and ease of getting a stick I never gave much thought to the extra time of handling the craft materials. I reckon it is also nice to ensure you always have that 100% damage instead of dumping item early or wasting time with the degraded ones reduced damage.
