Simply takes alot of strikes to fell a tree without tool. punching down grass to convert too fibres and bushes for the sticks on the other hand are quite quick. first thing you always want to do is make a stone axe using the aforementioned grass and stick, along with a stone you can pick up off the ground and refine into a sharpened stone for the stone axe. From there, you shall be able to get everything you need in time

I think the game has changed since you watched that video.
You now need at least a stone axe to chop down trees.

Here is a link on how to create it.

I think at first, finding an existing house to hide is much quicker than trying to make your own house.

There is a stone axe in that video. It was recorded on Alpha 8.6, the current game version.

And, yeah, finding a good house to stay in for your first night is advisable. Stay there while you work on your own shelter over a few days.

No I was referring to the video that the OP watched about punching trees for wood.

Get a good amount, head off to the nuked out area, to the poi just east of gravetown. there are smokestacks there that you can use as a base and they are so high up you wont have to worry, just make a wooden door and fill in the hole in the ground.

This is always my first base. by the nightfall i'll have xbow and bolts for zombie killing, and hopefully I found a pipe to make a forge. Farm sand until you have a few clay, and convert whatever iron (hubcaps and the like) you can into iron ingots. Once you have all your rudimentary tools (pickaxe, shovel, axe) you can farm everything you need right close to that first smokestack base.

Make a few chests and fill them, there is penty of food around that area in coolers and backpacks and such. Don't worry about water, just save all the empty jars you find and make yucca juice from the plants that are easily collected in the desert.

When you decide to choose a spot for your base, get all you need to dig a mine, and head off to your chosen location. make sure to have plenty of wood to convert to ladders and wood frames, and dig a hole straight down away from the area you are going to build. (if you build on top of a mine it will screw up your ability to calculate structural integrity)

Dig all the way to bedrock, placing wood frames with ladder on the way down. Once at bedrock, create an area that you can work at night, with forges and campfires. Create plenty of storage.

in only a couple days you will have the game beaten, and can do whatever you want at your leisure.
alot to take in

It's good advice though, you should follow it. One thing to mention is once you get to the wasteland area east of the desert you should spend a while just mining the chunks of metal on the ground. Don't craft it into scrap metal first either, just put it in the forge as is. Just make sure you get a couple days worth of food, water, and a basic shelter before you spend time doing this. Until you get the hang of things spend your nights inside, crouched down, and don't make too much noise opening chests and crafting. Also, make sure game settings are not on "Feral" mode.

One more thing. Empty jars and making yucca juice is fine, but once you get some clay you can turn 1 jar into a mold. The recipie is easy enough to find. If you have a stack of sand and convert it into crushed sand, just throw it in the forge with that mold and you have all the empty jars you'll need for a long time. Fill them with water or yucca, and boil the ones you filled with water in campfire with a pot. If you don't find a pot you can make one, you'll find the recipie in the food section of the crafting menue.

Thank goodness, a little bit of realism. Go outside and punch a tree and see how long it takes to knock it down :P
