You need to build a forge, once you have a forge you then need to make a iron ingot mold with clay, (dig it up) once you have what you need place the mold, scrap metal and wood in the forge and it will start to spit out ingots. all can be found under the forge tab in the crafting menu.
First, pick up stones from the ground (at least 9) and a 'Small Iron Pipe' and create a forge.
Then, break grass and turn the grass into a plant fiber, and punch a bush for a stick.
Then make a stone axe, and break the dirt underneath you. After breaking a few blocks, you should get clay. Turn the clay into lumps of clay, and find the recipe for 'Iron Ingot Mold' in the crafting menu. Create it with the lumps of clay, then put it into the forge along with Scrap Iron and fuel for the forge.
If you put in enough scrap iron, you should get an iron ingot in the output slot.

Hope it helps!

As already mentioned you need stones and a iron pipe to build a forge, If you are unsure where to get iron pipes you can loot them from air conditioning units (found mostly on building roofs), sinks and also some zombies drop them in loot as well.

Cheers guys! :)
Also destroying toilets gives a short metal pipe.
Once you have your forge up and running if you have extra rebar laying around it melts down real nice for starter iron ingots.
this is kinda on topic )..... we dug giant cave in forest area and found about 8 iron ore in a 10 block or so area. and nothing in the rest, are there big ore viens to be found. or are they just scattered like that? Guess its pretty easy to just break boulders and use fragments for ingots, but i want an iron mine 8)

Yeah I think that's how it works. Ores like iron are scattered. The rest are stone.
This is consistent with other games like Terraria and Gnomoria, where metal ores are indeed scattered.

And yes I think boulders are easier.

Nah, you can find big veins.
First ore vein I found had about 50 iron ore, 50 lead, and 2 1/2 stacks of coal ore.
Look for clay deposits in water. If you dig that up there are always metals underneath when you get to the stone level.
I just went thru about 30 TNT. The first few where just to dig down fast. As soon as I hit stone I also hit a HUGE lead and potasium pocket. The lead made over 6k bullet tips with about 50 ingots left over for buckshot later. Little bit of iron and coal as well. Spent the rest of the TNT expanding the cave out in pretty much every direction and found nothing.... But I have plenty of cobblestone materials now.

Someone pointed out in another Thread that people were drowning bases and people so it's their temporary fix until they find something (I guess?)

Yeah, something like staying underwater forever will eventually be removed for balance. But I think that's far off for now.
