Scrap or Forge?
I was wondering, is it better to scrap random iron i find into Scrap Iron, or use it in a forge one i build one?

THere are a couple of threads about it here.

Short version: Scrapping makes you lose about 25% of the iron. If you have lots and don't care - scrap. this will put all different iron thing into one scrap heap and save you space in the backpack. If you are in early game and need every iron piece. Put them i the forge directly. Or scrap them one by one which in msot cases will not give you the penalty (this is for things that scrap into 1 iron scrap).

Copy and pasted from another thread:

I tested this out with brass in Creative Mode and this is what I've come up with:

BRASS SMELTED DIRECTLY IN FORGE

1 Scrap Brass = 10 Brass in Forge
1 Trophy = 10 Brass in Forge
1 Doorknob = 10 Brass in Forge
1 Brass Faucet (short) = 16 Brass in Forge
1 Household Faucet (short) = 16 Brass in Forge
1 Brass Faucet (tall) = 24 Brass in Forge
1 Household Faucet (tall) = 24 Brass in Forge
1 Candlestick = 30 Brass in Forge
1 Car Radiator = 50 Brass in Forge

BRASS SCRAPPED TO INVENTORY

1 Trophy = 1 Scrap Brass
1 Doorknob = 1 Scrap Brass
1 Faucet (all types) = 1 Scrap Brass
1 Candlestick = 2 Scrap Brass
1 Car Radiator = 3 Scrap Brass

There is definitely an advantage to smelting Candlesticks, Faucets and Radiators (particularly the latter 2) directly in the Forge. However it would appear that you break even when scrapping Trophies and Doorknobs.

I'll test out Lead next :)

Edit: I also noticed that scrapping 1 Trophy/Doorknob will give 1 Scrap Brass but scrapping 2 Trophies/Doorknobs also gives 1 Scrap Brass. Not sure if this is a bug or deliberate...thought it might be worth mentioning.

LEAD SMELTED DIRECTLY IN FORGE

1 Scrap Lead = 5 Lead in Forge
1 Fishing Weight = 5 Lead in Forge
1 Lead Trophy = 10 Lead in Forge
1 Car Battery = 160 Lead in Forge

LEAD SCRAPPED TO INVENTORY

1 Fishing Weight = 1 Scrap Lead
1 Lead Trophy = 1 Scrap Lead
1 Car Battery = 24 Scrap Lead

So there is no disadvantage to scrapping the Fishing weights but it would be better to smelt Trophies and Batteries directly in the Forge. Of course, Car Batteries are now in demand for the Mobile Spotlights... :)

I also noticed that scrapping 2 Fishing Weights will yield only 1 Scrap Lead (similar to the Brass Trophies and Doorknobs). However, scrapping 2 Lead Trophies will result in 3 Scrap Lead.

I did not do any comparisons for the Iron Fragments, Scrap Iron, Tin Cans, etc...sorry!

Hope this info helped!

Thanks. I think unless I absolutly need the space, I'll probably keep stuff unscrapped.

Anyone done this with Iron?

@Grue I hope you realize that this thread is from Jan 2016. Most of this information is grossly out of date by now. Especially if you're playing the a16exp...

Raw iron yields more 'cooked' iron in the forge when placed in directly, as opposed to scrapping it, then forging the scrap you got.

How much more though?
Like with lead fishing weights you do not really gain much by melting vs scrapping, but a lead trophy will give 10 times as much if melted.

So the question is, what about iron materials:
Is it very much loss to scrap an empty can?
What about the candy tins?
Hubcaps?

Feel free to update it then.

As of A16 you receive 33% more yield from forging items directly, rather than scrapping then forging.

A16:

Scrap:
1 candle stick = 45 brass
1 car radiator = 75 brass

Forge:
1 brass scrap = 1 brass
1 candle stick = 60 brass
1 car radiator = 100 brass

If you want to get the most out of your material then you can smelt it in the forge or you can scrap it but at a loss. If you are short on space and your a long way from home its generally best to scrap it. I scrap almost all lead and iron i come across regardless however brass items i dont recommend scrapping simply because brass is valueable for making ammo casings and it cant be aquired via mining so every unit of brass matters.

I'm guessing players use the search function in Steam and post in the first discussion that displays results that they have questions about.

They should really make a "Necro warning" for someone posting in a thread super old so they know it's ancient.
