Character progression is tied to map and not the character itself, seriously?
Even items

Yes. This is actually pretty common in games of this nature. You don't take characters across different save games, they are tied to the save.

Not really, what is common is to have a character that is independent from the world it joins. So it gives you freedom to play different worlds with the same character.

Prime example and one of the best executions: terraria

I always thought of Terraria as the exception, not the standard. Besides, Terraria is an action RPG, not a survival game. Minecraft is closer to 7 Days to Die than Terraria, and it locks progress to each world.

Yes, Terraria is an exception to the rule. So is Valheim. In the latter, it can cause quite a number of issues even.

Anyway if you want to keep your character and move it to a new map you can generate a new world and copy your character from the old map to the new one.

While it might be interesting to allow for transporting characters between maps under certain specific situations, the potential for seriously exploiting it is massive. As is the potential for massive boredom. I guess I'm not really sure what you are hoping for, considering there are very finite limits to total progression possibilities to begin with.

I mean, you want to start a new worlds with all of the skills and XP you gained in 300 days of the previous world? What's the point? Unless the new world starts at the exact same gamestage you were playing at previously, you can instantly build anything, it'll take you 2 minutes to build up a decent base, you can scavenge and loot high level items immediately, there is no actual progression left to work towards, etc. I'd be bored by day 2, no challenge left. Or, if gamestage starts over but you have all those skills, you'd essentially be a nearly invincible superman that could walk through the game blindfolded and still barely get a scratch. Again, how fun would that be?

Hell, as soon as I start feeling like there is zero struggle, I stop playing... Sometimes I start a new map to try different things, sometimes I just shelf the game for a while and do something else, then come back to it. Starting a new game as a sudden expert in everything would just make that cycle happen MUCH faster.

If you're playing multiplayer and the host is not online or quits the game, tough luck to everyone else, all progress lost, this is bad game design at it's worst.

Why bother giving so many profile options when progress is not even tied to them...

That'd be why Dedicated Servers exist. :) And why pretty much all games with this feature have them.

Yup. Your problem here is with the host and not with the game. Use the tools that are given to you instead of complaining.

Have you checked terraria's main tag on steam?

Imagine the outrage of anyone out there playing a multiplayer game where they are not the host and having all their progress mean nothing unless they specifically join that host.

As I see it's bad game design, just wanted to understand the reason behind it.

I am the host of my own world, and was thinking to changing to a 4k map instead of the 8k we have now, since travel times for missions are insane. Of course the first thing I noticed on the new world was, no items and level 1, having to restart all over.

1. Those are player-added tags, and that same tag also includes "Open World" and "Craft". I don't see a lone Survival tag on it.
2. Considering almost every survival game out there functions like this, why would they expect their progress to carry over?

And as you've been told, you can copy and paste your character data into your new world. Virtually the same thing.
Forgot to mention this, but it'd also be counter-intuitive for characters carrying over progress to be the default since it'd take time to figure out how to start from scratch over again. When people create a new game, the intention of doing so is almost always to start over. Otherwise, you're looking for a kind of New Game Plus in a survival game.
