Not really, what is common is to have a character that is independent from the world it joins. So it gives you freedom to play different worlds with the same character.
Prime example and one of the best executions: terraria
I mean, you want to start a new worlds with all of the skills and XP you gained in 300 days of the previous world? What's the point? Unless the new world starts at the exact same gamestage you were playing at previously, you can instantly build anything, it'll take you 2 minutes to build up a decent base, you can scavenge and loot high level items immediately, there is no actual progression left to work towards, etc. I'd be bored by day 2, no challenge left. Or, if gamestage starts over but you have all those skills, you'd essentially be a nearly invincible superman that could walk through the game blindfolded and still barely get a scratch. Again, how fun would that be?
Hell, as soon as I start feeling like there is zero struggle, I stop playing... Sometimes I start a new map to try different things, sometimes I just shelf the game for a while and do something else, then come back to it. Starting a new game as a sudden expert in everything would just make that cycle happen MUCH faster.
If you're playing multiplayer and the host is not online or quits the game, tough luck to everyone else, all progress lost, this is bad game design at it's worst.
Why bother giving so many profile options when progress is not even tied to them...
Have you checked terraria's main tag on steam?
Imagine the outrage of anyone out there playing a multiplayer game where they are not the host and having all their progress mean nothing unless they specifically join that host.
As I see it's bad game design, just wanted to understand the reason behind it.
I am the host of my own world, and was thinking to changing to a 4k map instead of the 8k we have now, since travel times for missions are insane. Of course the first thing I noticed on the new world was, no items and level 1, having to restart all over.
2. Considering almost every survival game out there functions like this, why would they expect their progress to carry over?
