You can give the drone a healing mod and put some medkits in it's inventory, and it will heal you when sufficiently injured. There's a morale boost to give you slight stamina regen too.
I don't use the other robotic items, but the sledge is nice to ragdoll enemies when deployed. You can give it mods too to increase damage (Does it get damage/effect buffs when deployed?)
Turrets are really good too, but you've got to have a large source of lead to make AP rounds for them, which is where they really shine in late game situations.
The drons are also fully worth esp. due to the storage space, but i don't use them. I think they don't fit into the game (subjectiv).
And all of that with NO ammo usage on the sledgehammers.
EDIT: Sledgehammers are awesome for horde nights too. I currently have a sledgehammer I place at the top of some stairs. Zombies run up, get punched in the face and launched all the way to the base of the stairs... where I have second sledgehammer that punches them repeatedly when they stand up. Both sledgehammers have the burning shaft mod, so they're setting the zombies on fire too.
A pair of shooting robot turrets can be LETHAL. They automatically aim for the head. And with the massive increases to head damage from INT attribute, they can start popping heads off like zits. They do use up a LOT of ammo though. And the ammo is made from scrap iron, so that starts to compete with iron/steel ingot production.
I usually set them up so that one points towards the location the zombies will charge from, and then the second is perpendicular usually in a side hallway. The second will only fire if they enter it's view. Otherwise both turrets will shoot the same target simultaneously, and waste a bunch of ammo. A pair of high level turrets, with mods like full auto trigger, longer barrel, and drum magazines will just utterly annihilate entire charges of even super high level enemies (irradiated, super mutants, zombie bears, etc).
The drone's stamina mod is fairly useful if you like being on foot a lot. It's not a mega effect but I definitely notice a difference re: running long distances or other stuff, if I don't use it.
They've improved the drone's AI so it doesn't get in your way as much - if you're moving around. If you're doing something like whacking a giant field of farmplots, or building large or repairing a huge wall, it might occasionally. :P I tell it to stay put if doing stuff like that.
It also has a tendency to always immediately try to get "behind" you, meaning sometimes I end up doing a circle dance with it while trying to click on it to access its inventory. I have to full-stop a few seconds and let the drone settle before turning chr to face it.
Caveat: I think people still can "lose" the drone, even if it's more rare, and imo it's more likely to happen if it's out while you're driving a vehicle, because of speed of travel. I have yet to ever "lose" one myself, but ... I don't drive much.
Anyway - never used the turret thingies for more than 1 minute so no clue.
Nachoboi: Yes each mod increases damage for both robotic turret types.
Tangentially related, I didn't like the default Stun Baton in Int builds so I made some modifications that make it more fun (imo)

I think the ammo might be more expensive to make now, but they are very effective.
