An honest opinion on version 1.0
So to start this off, i've been playing this game since alpha 16 and i have about 1700hrs in it.

I loved the survival aspect of the game more than the tower defense action by far. And even when we lost the "gunparts" which i was always hoping to return as it made sence for any fire-arm to lose quality, i kept playing.

Survival and choice where always there, go to snow or desert but you need proper clothing, if not you needed a ton of food or drinks and even then die to the temperatures in said biomes. You wanted to be safe in temperature, stay in the forest biome, city's there where just as good as in the snow or desert.

Alpha 21 was great, new poi's, extra work on the city's actually looking like city's with sewers and everything. I believe i even had most hours in this alpha.

Now on version 1.0 i have played about 20hrs and i am stopping, here is why:

- First of all: They can now stop calling this a survival game, temperature is gone, you can go naked in the snow and not even feel cold, there is no clothing system left, it's just armor.

- Secondly: There are no big cities in the forest biome anymore, i tried creating maps with a lot of forest and very few wasteland, guess what, all small towns in the forest, bigger in the desert etc. Basically, you can't stay in the forest, you are obligated to go to the snow and so on. Which i believe is more like an rpg game than an open world one.

- The rest: you still need food and water but once you have yucca and can cook bacon and eggs, survival stops completely. You are also bound by books which binds you even more to an rpg kind of play.

The good: In my opinion the only good thing left in this game is the building which is still better than a lot of other games.

I am really sad because i loved this game...

Point 1 and 2 are very easy fixed with a few lines in your xml files.
~5 minutes work if you check the forum and guide section
~30 minutes if you check them yourself.
Temperature:

These can all be fixed by mods but yeah it's stupid. It's like one step forward, three steps back with these guys. It's like they have no clue what they want or too many chefs in the kitchen.

I've been playing since A6 or 7 and there has been so much stuff they have removed...put back in....removed again....changed....changed back to original....removed....etc

The building is the one thing has me still playing but you can only build so much before you move on to something else.

Fully agree.
But you can, and it's not more work as to start a thread about it ;-)

I actually feel like 1.0 is almost exactly the same but with new armors and nice animal models. I'm having a good time but it doesn't feel much different.

Temperature was already too easy to overcome before so I haven't really missed it.

I would like temperature to become an issue though.

My current map is my favorite ever, yeah on A21.2 I had pine forest towns, but guess what, I have photo proof, it copy-pasted city layouts so the diner next to the hospital three blocks appeared in both cities lmao fail.... but it was still good....

Here is my current map, spent 12 days in burnt forest then went north to wasteland, now Day 40. Its servicable, factoring biome lootstage penalty in too..... I dont see the pine forest as 'the place to be', a loss I guess for those who do. You can make nice maps without XML:

Edit: Sorry to say I did find some copy-pasting in 1.0, but anyways... The large cities offers plenty of variety.

Agree with you 100%. The development of this game has been an interesting journey these past 12 years, ending in a meh final product that has better models.

I will say this is one of my favorite games. But, I will admit over the years they have gone in the wrong direction with a lot of things. The game has strayed far from the advertised "sandbox" and transitioned into a railroady RPG.

I've noticed that if there is something that needs improved, they will improve it but for some reason decide to touch 2+ other features which either only needed a tweak or were perfectly fine, and end up reworking/removing them for the worse.

The whole element of survival in the game is non-existent. Past day 2 the only survival needs (food and water) become insanely trivial. Now with temperature gone there is even less there. I know that temperature was super easy to deal with before, but again some simple tweaks would of made the mechanic perfectly fine.

Skill trees have devolved into a "class" based system, which literally defeats the entire point of a sandbox. Want to use snipers and clubs? Too bad. Want to farm but speced into perception? Too bad. I miss when you got better at something by actually doing it, which had the side affect of making any strategy/build viable and accessible at any stage of the game. (I will admit though having to make 800 stone axes was dumb - crafting can be purely skill points lol). The skill trees should be split into categories based on what they help with (survival, combat, crafting, harvesting, etc.) instead of a "class". Also I don't see a point in classes when certain skills are necessary for everyone.

I do like how POIs are all very unique and hand-crafted, but my god how they force you to take a predetermined path is an absolute snoozefest. Don't even get me started on spawn/alert triggers in POIs (literally the worst mechanic in the current game, and makes stealth garbage).

Traders are a very good mechanic and I don't mind the quests. Just wish the tiers were game-stage or day based and not based on how many you have done.

Really I just want to not be forced into certain playstyles, which if you try to avoid are actively punished for. I want to play an open-world sandbox survival not a min-max RPG class builder.

Agreed. The game has turned into a arcade game for consoles then a proper survival game. As soon as i tested 1.0 i imminently dropped it as a old time player. And i've owned it also around alpha 16, if not earlier where the builds were "Wonky structures." and square terrain.

Alpha 21 was beast, for what it had. Not too sure how they've curb stomped themselves in the mouth by ruining the game entirely and release it to 1.0. Unsure why people like it either. Its soulless. And it makes sense when they are asking 40 bucks for less content.

Edit: And thats coming from someone that loved the game to bits, from playing modded to even vanilla. It just lost its touch and its a damn shame. No amount of current updates are going to fix it since its clear its meant to be a arcade game now.

All I know is that I re installed the game and my fps has dropped from steady 60 to 25-35 and it just doesn't feel the same. The theme song doesn't fit the game anymore either as it isn't as scary as it used to be.
Yeah, i want the survival aspect to be the main focus again. I don't agree with the general consensus that you have to modify your XML files, use mods or lower every beneficial setting while increasing every setting that "increases difficulty" to their limits...

I hope that TFP is gearing up to make the survival aspect much more apparent and a major focus of the gameplay; but given their track record, most likely it won't be.

You hit all the high and low points well. I tried 1.0 and hated it for many reasons. I will stick with older versions of the game as well as some of the better full conversion mods like Darkness Falls, The Wild West, and a few others.

I'm sure there will be a hood mod around the corner. I am still enjoying 7 days as there is no game even close to what it offers. Early adopters usually don't keep playing after 1.0.
