What survival?
I only played the last several Alpha builds on and off on occasion. Alpha 14 was probably my most active time in the game and then again in 16 with a light sprinkling here and there through the years.

At what point did the survival aspect of this game take a back seat to the first person shooter? This went from being a good survival game to being a worse version of nearly every generic zombie shooter already out there.

You can still play the old alphas using the beta tap directly here in steam.
If you want to know when one aspect of the game was scraped/changed you should go abit into detail which aspect you actually mean.

In case you want official infos check:

as example for changes from A19 to A20

Their decisions in game direction likely are to increase users online for game statistics. (Takes longer to get things done). Appears to be working.

I never felt like the survival aspect of the game was challenging enough, even going back to Alpha 8 when I started. Food and water was really never a big problem.

I would really like the scarcity of food and water and the difficulty of extreme temperatures. I don't think it would be popular with the average player though.

I've seen a ton of newbies absolutely struggle to survive in this game. They complain about not being able to find anything, not even a pot to cook in. I think they're just trying to make it more accessible to newer players. Anyone who's been playing for even a year has it absolutely nailed down though.

The big reason the noobs complain is because they have not learned the value of looking in every container (or even what is and isnt a lootable container). I think most of the complaints are from the lazy gamer generation that cant find end game loot within 10 minutes of starting up a fresh world.

The problem is, they released some good substantial updates mixed in with some really detrimental ones. So there's not just one single build that works well. For instance, I recall the original generated maps being god awful, with roads to nowhere, massive chasms dropping off the world and almost no water sources spawning anywhere. So I really don't want to risk dealing with that disaster all over again! I also love the pre-formed towns they designed to populate the map with and was blown away when I saw my first proper road and curb in this game when I came back to it a couple years ago.

But along with those fixes and improvements, came things like traders, and the questing system. I also recall a farming nerf at one point, making it impractical to be both a farmer and a zombie fighter, making you almost rely on foraging and trading for food considering how easy it is without having to alter a build to do so.

I wish there was a way to take specific features of these updates and pick and choose which ones we want to keep or revert back :(

I recall finding enough food to last weeks in just one small shack back in A8, which is when I started, too. Food was crazy abundant back then, water too.

This game already has more gameplay options than most offer, but I agree it would be great to be able to adjust chances of starvation or dehydration for those wanting an extra challenge.

I agree with this too, pretty sure it is totally impossible, but if you could choose your favourite aspects of each alpha, we'd have the perfect game - or lots of different versions tweaked to suit individuals' idea of the perfect 7D2D!

i played like one game in 14 and one in 16 idk didnt like it then so i was just waiting for them to finish it. (and here we are all these years later and its still not finished.. lol) dont recall the survival aspects ever being anything worth the name tbh. but now in 1.0 theres no survival at all really, only thing that can mess u up a little, or set u back is having bad luck and not finding a cooking pot at the start..

I don't think the survival element has changed much, other than temperature mechanics being essentially removed. Water is basically a non-factor now with the unlimited clean water dispensers you can spam out, but that's not really that much easier than the old bottle stacking which was just a little more tedious rather than being more impactful to survival mechanics. The "survival" aspect of the game has always been in reference to surviving the zombies primarily.

If anything, food is "harder" now than it has ever been, at least if you don't grab one of a couple specific skills to deal with it. Farming literally doesn't work anymore without going down a whole skill line.

For those who care for temperature you can add it back using xml files:

I agree with OP currently. But there's supposed to be a clothing + weather system overhaul later this year. Along with adding temperature effects back in, this should also make food water drain a larger factor when you are debuffed from temp.

Yeah, because 7d is such an awesome pvp experience that all the Fortnite snowflakes come flocking to it right? 7d would be a terrible choice to target Fortnite players with.

It would be, then again the devs haven't exactly been known for their sound business decisions around this game...

Really? So turn me towards where they promote the game as a massive pvp game? To lure in those Fortnite snowflakes.
