how should I invest in armor?
I know 1.0 rebuilds the armor system so no single set is above the rest, so if my build is a light piece, a medium piece, and 2 heavy pieces, should I be investing in the different armor skills or is it too expensive to bother with till the mid/end game?

Buy at least 1 rank of Armor, whichever one you feel like.
The reason is that it curates that type of magazine discovery.

Without any ranks in Armor you'll get the magazines as completely random drops, but with at least 1 rank you'll start getting them in your "Quest reward" crafting mag bundles as well as finding them everywhere in the world.

The armor magazines are now governed by perk points in your base attributes (str, fort, int, etc.), not by perk points in the specific armor skills.

I have zero perk points in the armor skills, many points in base attributes, and I get more armor magazines than any other magazine. Invest in armor skills only if you want the listed benefits for that type of armor, such as stamina cost reduction, durability, and so on.

I don't think that's true anymore, you're chance of finding mags is based off total attribute points spent iirc.

I usually don’t even bother to spec into armors until I have nothing left that I want to spec into. Seems like armor isn’t super duper important enough to try to get the best out of it.

Investing in medium or heavy armor in 1.0 is like investing in Pack Mule. It's a convenience pick and can be skipped. Once you find the combat magazine that gives you the 'Adrenaline Rush' effect you won't be slowed down by armor. So at that point the armor skill is mostly just boosting your durability. Unless you're running a Steel Knuckles build in Raider armor or something similar you shouldn't really need the durability boost.

Random question, do raider gloves increase all melee based damage or just fists? I've been using raider gloves for my club to do more damage but maybe that's a mistake!

Here you go, a handy chart:

The Gloves say "Melee damage" so it's literally any damage caused by melee attacks of any sort.
