Duct tape has become rare?
Or am I just super unlucky?

I'm about 40 hours into my save and I barely found duct tape. I'm always crafting it from glue/cloth... And now found myself completely out of it and having to farm cotton for cloth etc.. even glue is all out... so my progression is completely halted by Duct tape / Cloth / Glue :(

Am I the only one with this problem? I have been using these resources reasonably scarce. As in waiting til I could craft the legendary version of something, to not waste anything.

Always try to pick up the carcasses from the road. This is a quick way to get bones for the glue and rotten meat for the beds and later for the shamfood (yummie).

Collect those useless bandages and scrap them later, collect all the glue, make extra duct tape, I get tons of tape without collecting materials for it. Could be unlucky.

Cloth I end up with miles of, since I loot/whack just about everything, trashbags, couches, curtains, even the stupid little noise-makers on the ground.

But yeah, duct tape itself seems less likely to spawn. Glue I find a decent amount - not tons, mind, but usually "enough" - in trash, vehicles, other containers + get lots of bones from roadkill, trash, dumpsters, kitchen cupboards etc.

I don't generally need a lot of duct tape for myself tho, so I haven't any trouble at least crafting basic stuff and occasional gear upgrades.

Yeah, I rarely find duct tape as loot. Most of my duct tape comes from either crafting or quest rewards or buying all I can from a trader.

Yeah, duct tape is a bottleneck right now, being rarely found on loot. So, ways you can go around this is putting points into "better barter", which also unlocks better items from the trader. At level 3, you will start to find stacks of 20 or more on some trader, on level 5 is a common item, and if you pair the 25% better prices with a enforcer helmet (+20% better prices) for example, it becomes super cheap. Alternatively, you can look for bones (which are super easy to find and collect on scale), and with 5 water colectors, you can make glue and then with cloth (you can look for white flowers, or make a plantation of it), glue becomes a no problem at all, its all about following one of these 2 strategies. the one i like most is just buying the stuff, its just easier and if you don't want to make a farm, its really the way to go.

Try loot in some construction sites, personally I think it become rarer when you loot at garbages bin or piles.

Another reason why they seem so rare because glue is harder to craft, in ealier build glue can craft easily with bone + muddy water. Now water become scarce and recipe change to bone + boiled water so it took longer to craft.

Glue and cloth are easy to load up on. I usually plant a ton of cotton for cloth, and bones are found everywhere. Make several dew collectors for water and you are all set to make a tape factory.
RopeDrink Aug 5, 2024 @ 11:00am
Indeed. The idea of sacrificing water to make glue may sound terrible, but modded dew-collectors will have you rolling in water, and you can't fart without stinking up some bones from corpses, animals, etc, so in time -- when you really want armfuls of duct-tape for upgrades -- you'll have everything you need to cook/craft tonnes.

Until then, cloth is something I quickly start to dump during inventory management due to having so much. Whether it's chopping up beds, window blinds and curtains, chairs, trash on the floor (to prevent noise), or simply crafted out of cotton - I am rarely ever short on cloth - so apart from the rarity of looting fully-crafted duct-tape, it's common enough to be a non-issue, and rare enough to feel special.

Agreed that duct tape itself is uncommon as loot. Grab all the water, bones, and cloth that you find. You shouldn't need to plant your own cotton. Go out into the forest and you can find clusters of it and can pick 20+ cotton in a few minutes, along with chrysanthemum and goldenrod for better drinks. Chop down curtains in any house that has a lot of them. Keep an eye out for the carpet stores in downtown areas; the big rolls of carpet yield lots of cloth.

Just one point in the cooking perk reduces cooking times significantly, making it much easier to keep boiling murky water.

Traders often have stacks of them for sell. IIRC, it's common to find stacks of 20-25 on traders.

I loot all the trash. I usually get some glue or tape. It's not enough to keep up with tape-needs but it helps.
I bought 50 tape off the trader the other day. It's about the best find in all of his wares. Lol

I grab cloth from beds and destroying all the curtains with a knife when I'm questing. It really adds up if you go for all of it.

It's definitely harder to get cloth needs met now that you can't rip clothes apart.

I scav alll the bone pile carcasses and partial carcasses. Then every tent is fast cloth. Gonne do a house, blinds drop a lot of cloth, don`t waste time early banging on couches and chairs, even for leather. All of the above in animals. `Added to all the glue I find I rarely need to cook glue on a fire, and never have bout any glue or tape. Slow down because everything drops materials. Learn them and never pass em up. I don`t chop trees or smash boulders. (earlier game). Tents are everywhere and drop lots of cloth.

👆 @Mathaniel
Yeah, I forgot about tents for cloth, that's about the best source. I think you can destroy those CDC canopies for cloth also
