It isn't too difficult, but even if it is you can just change the settings to suit yourself. You could increase the loot (or decrease it), increase XP, lower the zombie spawns, make them walk instead of run, whatever. The point is, this game should never be too difficult, it should be just difficult enough if you customize the game settings.
The game might well seem very difficult when you start playing, but that's normal and not limited to playing solo. Expect to fail repeatedly to begin with. My first death was less than a minute after doing the old tutorial jobs (which were trivial and took a couple of minutes). I died dozens of times in the early days of playing. That's normal. There's a definite learning curve.
After that, things start to click and it is quite manageable to play solo. The game has a series of tutorial challenges that you can, and should, read. They'll give basic pointers on things to watch for or do to get started. Nothing advanced, but lets you set out with some confidence as you explore the game yourself.
In general i would say in singleplayer you have:
• better performance
• better immersion
• higher difficulty
In multiplayer you have:
• faster progression (even in the new system in experimental and 1.0)
• coop feeling
• stronger rpg vibes (due to earlier and stronger specification)
In my 1.8k hours i played ~60/40 coop(2-4 player) / solo
It's great to play solo.
But having played multi player and solo, I much prefer solo. First and foremost, no need to adjust your playing time, or share loot.
But for single player, i set option for extra EXP and extra loot drop, normal difficulty.
Basically, you can make your playthrough as easy or difficult, as you want.
