The auger is no good anymore.
The auger used to feel like a major improvement over steel. its high attack speed combined with the chance to one shot ore with the perk made it just chew through a mine.

Now your with that chance to one shot ore gone it just feels worse than a rank 6 steel pickaxe. Bring back that chance for the auger to one shot or re-balance its stats. a rank 6 motor tool should feel like a significant improvement over steel.

I saw this longish video that tested auger vs. steel pickaxe, and apparently according to them, the auger no longer is super better than a maxed steel pickaxe regarding speed vs. ore gathered. A little bit, but not much. Edit: although it may depend on specific ore or something, like iron ore t6 auger would still "win".

I'm very happy to not use the Auger. I hate the sound :shit: it makes while mining.

I never really cared for the auger as my steel pickaxe loaded with mods and specced into Miner 69er will one shot the ores making mining quick and where I can actually hear if a zed is nearby.

FYI: the Auger does not build up heat unless you rev it so if you are going to use it, I would recommend letting that sucker rip and only let off the left click when you need to re-fuel.

Even back when, I recall trying to use an auger because I wanted to get rid of some misplaced concrete blocks. I didn't find it all that much better. And the noise was definitely annoying as all get out.

The steel pick with all the mods would really be faster if you could one shot iron ore with it.

Unfortunately at standard block damage values, a quality 6, fully modded pick completely perked out while wearing miner gear still takes 2 shots to break iron ore, which is where the auger wins.

If you're after shale or coal, though, the pick is a fantastic competitor that handily keeps up.

Once I can craft or find one, I just use an auger at all times because it is faster for gathering iron and iron is what I need most of in the game, but you're not going to be left in the dust if you prefer a steel pick, instead.

I really do miss the ability to one shot ore, but I think the new perk completion bonus is higher yield which I think works out better, overall.

They should let you craft an auto miner out of an auger and a high enough robotics skill. This would add another use for more gas and you can spend more time exploring p.o.i's instead of digging a giant hole. They could then move the "Heat" off of rain collectors and onto this thing which would make way more sense.

You can still 1-shot iron blocks with decked out t6 steel pickaxe ---- if you have player block damage at 200%. :steammocking: Edit: eg, people who say you can one-shot probably have that upped.

Edit: I seem to recall in one Alpha where that wasn't the case tho...like it always took two hits even with high player block damage. Maybe I remember wrong tho.

I think the real problem is that they made the pickaxe overpowered. I think it's just too easy to quickly get resources. Just my opinion. Everyone likes different progression speed.

The pickaxe is better for ore and stone because it can one shot the ore and stone with the right setup and the auger needs multiple hits.

The auger is absolutely better for clay as it massively outperforms the shovel.

Yeah you haven't played the latest patch have you?

I'm on 100% block damage and with a tier 6 pick I can one shot stone and ore and I only have 3/5 in miner 69er. I'm pretty sure you need the bonus from mining armor to do it but you can absolutely do it.

The "one shot ore chance" was removed in A21, making the Auger useless then...

it doesn't just feel worse than steel pick, it objectively is. its about 50% as effective in ore gathered per unit of time

If you mean the latest experimental, then no, I have not. Didn't seem worth bothering with until it went 'live."

That said, I also actually rather spaced out on mining armor set bonuses. I was only looking at the pick and pick mods themselves, no buffs from anything. I don't bother with mining set bonuses, or a lot of other set bonuses, forgot they existed, derp, lol. So even in b333 maybe it's possible even at 100%, or at least 150%. Or not. didn't test. Anyway ....

.... I do agree auger might be better if it was improved to be significantly better than steel pickaxe, in terms of progression factors. But since I can't stand the auger noise, I'm also kinda glad it's not. :p

I'm not a huge fan of the auger after they changed the sound effect, but I'm a huge fan of it replacing two tools (shovel and pick) so I only need to carry around one. That's one of my top-valued reasons for attacking with Knife, Steel Knuckles, or Wrench (replacing a weapon slot and harvest slot with a single item).

<edit>toolbelt slots -- so I don't need to open inventory and swap tools around when it's time to harvest clay, ore, corpses, etc.</edit>

Need a slot (atleast one) for fuel though..? :)
