That's it in a nutshell.
Maybe it would be OK if there was a simple swap mechanic. For some things, anyway. Farming, maybe. Maybe the wardrobe mentioned in plans somewhere. Quick swap from normal set to farming set.
If we're going down the fantasy RPG route of enchanted armour (which we are in A22/1.0), I'd prefer to be able to choose which enchantments to apply to which armour.
Since outfits are the only clothes/armor we pretty much have to use them, but their bonuses are too good. They are absurdly good once you reach Q6.
In my last game I decided to give them a thorough testing just to see how they worked out in actual game play, so I put points into the armor skills early on, both medium and heavy since the loot bonuses stack. By Day 14 I had maxed out armor crafting and workshops and started crafting Q6 outfits just in time for the second Blood Moon.
Every single aspect of the game got faster and easier after that, so much so it sort of ruined that play through. Yeah, I was swapping armor but only certain pieces. I didn't care about the set bonuses. Plus the increased storage in vehicles means I could carry an entire wardrobe with me with no issues.
I gathered more materials in less time, I got more XP for almost everything I did (it seems bugged for upgrading blocks), I could buy anything for far below its base price, I needed fewer magazines and I did far more damage. Essentially I spent far less time on the survival aspects of the game, and all that was left to do was run quests which I did faster because I was doing so much more damage.
All of that meant I leveled up faster, which means I spent more skill points and just about every point I spent increased the drop rate of some other magazine. Maxing out crafting in less time meant I got T3 weapons in almost no time at all. I went from using a Q1 .44 Magnum to a Q6 Desert Vulture in 2 days thanks to a visit to Crack A Book, a loop through a few cities to loot mailboxes & the Nerd chest armor.
I'm on Day 22 right now and so far I've maxed out every single crafting skill I am actually using. I've maxed out workshops, armor, pistols, vehicles, electronics, traps, cooking, salvage tools, repair tools and probably a few others I am forgetting. All thanks to the outfits.
Anyway, I'm thinking of modding the outfits to reduce their bonuses and starting a new game since I ruined this one with too much of a good thing.
I hate this new system because of that...
Clothing should be how we customize armor to look
Mods should control the bonuses derived from our armor
Assign the set bonuses to the mods
This is a simple system that would open up customization and let us look and perform how we want to.
This game is all over the place and they can't seem to make up their minds.
Just choose what you your toon would wear and deal with the consequences........ This is the same same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that ruined D&D tabletop, this meta only attitude.... Don't get me wrong, I'm a diehard minmaxxer but I still want to be reasonable. I was actually sad when they changed the system to general weather protection vs, "hey you live in the desert, take that puffer off you dummy"
I was super happy to scrounge around in my armor box and put together a miner outfit last night, though. I had every last skill point in Fortitude, and I really needed some iron to smelt into steel, so the armor saved me from en eternal hell of slowly tink-tinking my way to several thousand steel using a stone axe.
So I like the flexibility of the new armor system, but I don't really engage with it much.
Yeah, it's definitely worth swapping for something like the barter hat one with the cigar because that's a huge boost to trade👍
Also, mining and farming gear is pretty worth it. I keep farm gear in a box next to my farm so I can swap at harvest time
