IzPrebuilt did a test and arrived at the conclusion that if you can one-shot the ore (or whatever), then Steel Pickaxe is better. Maybe two-shot it at most, but no more. EDIT: I watched another video, but he did a retest here, so here's that video:

For me, personally, the Auger doesn't drain your stamina, which is huge, IMO, as I play with Sprinters on and being caught with low stamina is always risky.

Steel pick on the simple fact that it doesn't obliterate your ears.

ill give it a try tomorrow once i get my forge put down again in middle of moving from pine to snow biomes im hoping with the 50% ore block damage from the gloves itll let the steel pickaxe 1 tap iron and lead since that seemed to be the big issue ill check tomorrow and post here

Just crouch since the game cuts volumes in half doing this (a terrible bug)

Worth noting that miner armour is now a thing, and the stamina use reduction from the outfit is pretty impactful. It's a lot easier to get to running stamina neutral without having maxed out miner 69er.

Because there are several variables (skills, armour available, are you just running on regular coffee or blackstrap?) it probably takes a bit of playing around to decide the best approach for each build.

Overall though, if you can run fatigue neutral and one-shot ore blocks, the pick will always be better. If you cannot manage that, a high end auger will often give you better returns.

Four points in Miner 69er, Level 6 Steel Pick with an Ergonomic Handle Iron Breaker and Bunker Buster, Miner Helmet and Outfit. You can hold down the left mouse button and never worry about stamina use. One-shots stone, two-shots everything else. I could probably even keep going while hungry and thirsty without a problem.

Auger is only worthwhile if you have no points invested in Miner 69er. But you pretty much need to invest heavily in that skill to even get access to an auger. And if you have an auger, you should already have a pick good enough to run fatigue-neutral.

with the new miner tier 6 gloves which raise block dmg by 50%. the steel pick will oneshot ALL blocks. includeing iron and lead. this assumes miner 69er maxed. which is easy as you only need 5 str base to get to 7 now due to the new mods for helmet. and 4 str is always worth it cause shotguns rule POIs.

the auger is faster for mineing clay or if you just want tons of screamers.

I always stay long at steel pick and just switch to auger when i can craft or find a T6 one.
Auger is simply faster even when you one pick KNO3 and Stone, but there is more than just stone at mining like sand, dirt.
Additional it's faster destroying crates/safes and you can free one space as auger is a shovel and a pick.

The downside is the screamer spawn you have, but that should be easy to handle at the gamestage where T6 auger are an option.
