I tried editing the prefabs.xml and changed the two copies of rekt to joel and bob and I reloaded the save file and they are still rekt compounds and traders but has the name changed? How to fix?
Before attempting any fix make a backup of your save.
If you have already visited those traders than those chunks/regions have already been generated on the map. As long as your base or other structures aren't near them you can regenerate those areas and it should bring in the replacement traders. You can do this by just deleting the appropriate region files from .../<yoursavename>/Region. Identifying the proper region file I'll try to explain below.
A second way that can work is go to the trader you want to update and then in the console use the chunkreset command, I think "cr f" without the quotes will work but it's been a while since I've done that for a trader. It can cause the trader to duplicate though in past experience.
A third way, if you have chunkreset enabled in the game options you can also just stay out of the area until it resets.

So, identifying the region file. Go to the trader, enable debug mode (with dm in the console) and then press F3 to display an information panel. Open your inventory so you have a cursor, and then click on the "Ch" radio button at the top of that panel. Now in the text below it will show Region and a name like r.-1.2.7rg. That will be region file you will need to delete. Leave the area before exiting the game, and then delete that file. When you visit the area again it should generate with the replacement trader.
Same problem on a self gen map. In fairness to TFP though, it's 4k and I didn't know to check each biome for a red dot.
Looks like I'll be starting over. Already have something like 108 of the 120 challenges too.
i made a post/request on something similar as to creating an option to either select the trader per biome or at least have a tick to randomize it. it got buried pretty fast, BUT, there was a reply that might be helpful here.. give a look.

all the best.
Well, if you stretch it I guess you could say the pregen maps are outdated. They were built with version 1.0 build 302 and we're now on build 313. New players are quite likely to just start with the pregen maps. The maps should have been checked before they were included in the steam download package.
There is a generic warning about "changing these settings may break trader progression" but the default map size is 8k, and biome sizes are not the same. And are we not supposed to change any of the other settings? That seems pretty boring.
If they are going to force this fixed progression on us, then the map generator should not allow maps that break it, or at least a warning at the end "this map does not include all traders, do you really want to continue?"
