Wood Logs...why
Brand new to the game, just been playing for a few weeks. A lot I love about the game, so awesome.

But one minor thing that grinds my gears...we cut down a tree and get planks...then we craft those planks into logs....

This isnt how trees work. My assumption is that logs were added in later, or something.

Reduction was done as a result of having a limited number of items that could exist in the code. Bloat by having logs, sticks, planks, ect was reduced. Same with ores.

And no, you aren't getting planks. It's just "resource wood".

It's big, it's heavy, it's wood. It's better than bad, it's good

Nothing in this game works like real life.

Contrary to popular opinion, cars do not grow on streets, zombies don't drop yellow knapsacks when they die, cars aren't created on a wooden workbench, trees don't grow to full size in a few days, and countless other inaccuracies.
Because it's not that kind of game? Project Zomboid does a decent job of trying to be a 'realistic' zombie apocalypse simulator for those interested in something like that.

What rolls down stairs, rolls over in pairs, rolls over your neighbor's dog?

I got my 16 year old daughter hooked on some of the calamity of that show.

Just think of “crafting” as sorting through a bunch of your wood pieces until you find a log that works. The icon looks like planks but it’s just “wood resource”. Lots of the middle steps are abstracted so getting a log is just sorting through several pieces of wood while making a building block includes (unseen) planing the rough cut wood into planks and fitting them together into the block.

Personally I think a thick rough cut branch would be a better icon that’s the planks.

A tree won't fall down just because you punch 600 times against it, you would just ruin your hand ;-)

It's not a realistic game (and it doesn't try to be).

But developers need to abstract to a certain point. There are also multiple sorts of wood out there, not all wood can be used to build. But that would increase the complexity and most people don't want tooo complex games.

That is why Ravenhearst probably switched it around. You cut down a wood pole and then in the saw convert it to a plank or a flat piece of wood

What bloat?

TFP keep removing things from the game to the point of getting rid of jars

and you say theres bloat???

Well, if they removed the bloat, then it's not there anymore. So that answers your "What bloat?" question.

I played Undead Legacy for a while and one of several ways they made crafting insufferable was that there are like 450,000 crafting materials. I needed to have a dozen boxes of mats to keep track of. So if you want your bloat back, I suggest looking there.

I'm not so sure about the "limited number of items that could exist in the code," though. I think it's more that players don't necessarily want a mat to craft a mat to craft a mat to craft a mat to craft a weapon part.

Shhh... TFP may figure out that trees should drop logs that we then need to craft into planks. And you'll use a lot more planks than logs.

UGH we tried UL, but its just like you said. It wasnt a game anymore, its was another job

That's why if you are going to go the way of an overhaul mod, Darkness Falls is the way to go. Khaine specifically looks to keep bloat down as much as he can. DK and UL are like night and day. If you haven't, give DF a try. You won't be disappointed, and they have a great Discord community.

Indeed the other overhauls I've tried have felt pretty lame except for Darkness Falls. I mean, War of the Walkers is a completely amateurish effort, just objectively, even if some people love it. Undead Legacy feels very cohesive and intentional but it sucks the fun out of the game for me. It's made for people who want to just grind forever and spend an insane amount of time jumping between two dozen workstations making different prerequisites for things in order to accomplish what would be a single button press in the vanilla game. Darkness Falls meanwhile strikes a perfect balance of adding a lot more to do without feeling grindy, giving real objectives, and adding more difficulty where it's needed. I did get put off by the difficulty in the wasteland but I've always meant to go back and give it another shot with proper armor that can survive the radiation.

About UL though, it has a lot of very dedicated fans and it seems to accomplish exactly what it aims to. Some people want all that bloat and all that grind. And hey, to the peeps who want water jars back? UL has jars AND bottles. Knock yourself out. TC, you're probably gonna love it when you find out there are like 8 types of wood. I don't remember if planks make logs or logs make planks but it doesn't stop there, you've got firewood and like leftover scrap wood and probably sawdust?
