First reactions to challenges
So after a pretty good first night of playing I think it is time to sum up the first impressions of the new challenges.

I love the idea of the feature, but there are a few complaints.

Some of the challenges are far to specific. Like get leather from restaurant booths when breaking them with a Stone Pickaxe.
- Suggesting where to get the items is great for new players, but locking in things so that it sometimes is almost impossible to find what i sneeded to progress the challenge on the lowest tier is kinda dissappointing to me.

So on to next problem we faced, harvest for example plastic with a stone axe.
- We harvested all of the suggested items on the list, most of them gave 0 progress on the challenge even if we got plastic. We encountered kinda the same thing with the pipes, breaking lots of stuff giving pipes with a stone axe but still 0 on progress.

Over all with a bit of polishing on wording and restrictions I'd say these challenges are a great way to go to get new players into the game and give them nice little hints on how to do things and progress. And the Xp as reward is a very nice touch.

I would add to this that not always will you get item for somethings.

We aciidentally found this afternoon, there is a button to track challenges and if you do you can see what items works with the challenge.

I also had the issue with plastic gathering not working; it says you can get it from things like blinds etc, but even that gave me 0 progress. And I'd collected enough plastic to make a dew collector (100) but had 0/50 progress.

I just found that, too. I'm tracking it for the Harvest Pipes Challenge. I'm not getting progress towards the challenge, and I have harvested everything that had an icon on it with a wrench. I've harvested 53 pipes with the wrench - still 0/10 progress. I think it's bugged right now.

Look at what the challenge says, it says using stone axe not wrench

I was just coming back to respond that I did notice this and was able to complete the challenge. I thought it said "With a scavenging tool". Could have sworn it said that.

I was working my way through the "New" challenges last night, it struck me, there was something familiar about them.
I woke up this morning and checked my game Achievements.
The "New" challenges appear to be an expanded, Mutton dressed as lamb version of the Achievements list, If the "coming soon Bandits" count as other player kills?, That would pretty much confirm it.
I really enjoy playing 7DTD, I have "Too many" hours of play on Console and PC, not to feel a little disappointed if this is the case.

Half the items on my harvesting section of the challenge window stopped progressing and the other half never started counting. *Edit* for the record I tried using stated tools and conditions such as the bone knife for the rotten meat and a wrench on toilets and sinks for the pipes but they stay frozen at a certain amount.

So far I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would. It helps move along your XP for leveling up in early game.

At first I really liked the challenges, they explained things for a new player and they gave gave free experience for anyone who already knew what they were doing. Or so I thought.

People seem to be struggling with the difference between the quest requirement and the explanatory text; something I also found confusing at first. And anyone who knows what they're doing already will quickly realize that the challenges are often far more of a time-sink and less productive than doing almost anything else since they often require using the least effective tool or method for a given task.

Is it difficult to find a few blue water barrels and hit 'em with a stone axe? No, not really; but in the time it takes to do that I could already have made more experience and plastic by hitting a few zombies and whacking the plastic blinds of a nearby house. Meanwhile, someone who doesn't know what they're doing will be wondering if the quest is bugged because the plastic blinds mentioned in the text aren't advancing the challenge.

I think this is an easy fix, though. Just make the challenge match the explanatory text and remove the requirement to use a specific tool.

It 100% does say "Using a wrench or some other salvaging tool..." don't know what that other guy was on about.

Mine litterally says "Harvest some Short Iron Pipes with a Stone Axe" Then in the later description they speak of wrenches and other salvage tools. Right under the name and before progress of the challenge is the info one needs to make sure one follows.

The challenges just strike me as busy work.

Leveling up and getting XP ate literally the easiest things to do in 7DTD, holding shift and w included (toggle run please. Never give up.)

They are like like filler episodes, bulking out the length of the season but not really adding anything other than something to distract from the fact that the game is still missing major content.

They don't negatively impact the game, but it's just a chore list to fill those "what now" moments that we have no main storyline to fill.
