Armor + fortbites
So, if I understand correctly if you have at least 50 armor rating and consume fortbites you get 100 armor rating = 100% damage negation (I've tested it in A18 and it worked, don't know about A19 though).

So, the best way to "win" the game is to get 50 armor rating, unlock fortbites recipe and get enough resources to craft a lot of them. Once you're done you are pretty much immortal as long as you have fortbites.

My question is: why is there no cap on max armor rating in this game and why are the fortbites so busted?

It doesn't work like that (A19). It mitigates recived damage by 50%.
Also crafting them requires lvl5 physician and cost 5 blood bags.

So crafting "a lot of them" for all time immortality is just a theory.

For a different angle, are you OK with weakened, disease infected zombies who can somehow smash through solid cobblestone and concrete with nothing but their hands?

armor rating should be capped at 90 so 90% DR
At 90% regular zombies are hitting for 1 and most ferals for 2 damage.
A 90% DR you have to do monumentally stupid things to die.

This isn't related to my original question.
I'm not talking about the overall game balance. I'm saying that it makes no sense to have an option in the game that makes it impossible to die. If you can't die, you can't "lose" so it's not survival anymore, it's the creative mode.

Personally, I think around 80% would be fine considering how many buffs and healing items you can use to sustain yourself.

Armor rating is a flat %
Basically your total armor rating is the % of damage you just don't take.

Sure but you have to continue making the FortBites, it isn't free. Your armor gets damaged, has to be repaired, it isn't free. Zombies on the other hand, can bang on concrete as long as they want and eventually get through, they have no limits.

If they introduce a setting called, "No FortBites" then let people play how they want, that would be OK with me. A setting called, "Give me paper thin armor", and the player can choose, that would be fine.

I'd be happier with a setting called "Zombies can't get through more than a paper bag", that would be awesome. I could go back to playing with Horde Night on.

Set zombie block damage to 25% then. You can survive a day 70 horde with just regular concrete pretty easily.

Nevermind, I just tested it in A19 and devs changed it to +50% damage mitigation instead of +50 armor rating as it was in A18. One step ahead of me I suppose

In A18 this is a problem, but A19 introduces some things that make it impossible for it to be the case.

In A19, While fortbites can protect you from damage, It cannot protect you from critical hits. You can't just ignore zombies. If you let them keep beating on you because you take no health damage you'll take critical hits that dramatically weaken your character and reduce your max health- And your max health can be reduced to 0 and you die because of it, iirc.

Yeah, but still in A18 you could become immortal for a few minutes with just one set of fortbites, which was pretty ridiculous if you ask me

I thought you are protected from critical hits while at full hp though? I remember reading about it in change logs

No, just changing the way player crits work.

  • Changed: Slower recovery of the dynamic crit resistance that occurs when taking multiple hits from zombies
  • Changed: Increased chance of getting criticals on the 2nd hit
  • Fixed: Crits trigger differently for clients and hosts

EDIT: More clarity from the config.

The base chance for getting a critical hit is 4%. As your health decreases this is increased. Each 10% reductions in health, increases the chance to get hit with a critical by an additional 4%.
It also increases your chances of other injuries from the attack.

I just checked, you're protected from critical injuries on the first hit while at full health: "When you are at full health a zombie can never cause a critical on the first hit so we don’t want to hear about unfair crits! =)"

It also says that armor is supposed to create a "buffer" against criticals
