Can corn grow anywhere?
I heard that corn is able to grow anywhere.
Would that mean that I can plant corn bunched together instead of all in rows?

Pretty much
Corn = C
Empty Space = E

Regular crop growth (having to till the ground with a hoe and planting on the result)

What I'm asking (planting corn on untilled dirt and without spacing)

You do not need tilled soil to grow Corn...my understanding is that is can even grow on asphalt although I have not tried this myself :)

Yes, you can plant corn anywhere, and yes, you can plant them side by side (eg, one plant per block, vs. the hoed earth every other block).

However placing the seeds can be a little tricksy at times...most of the time I can do it in a quick rhythm but if I "miss" the rhythm of walking and placing, it'll act like it doesn't want to place and you have to shift your angle/get in the right spot again.

Edit: The same goes for cotton, btw.

They have changed it so that the game will not allow you to plant anything anymore where it will not grow. that is good because there was a lot of confusion before. people planted Blueberries in the snow - since that is where they are found - but they would just die. Or planted on normal soil instead of tilled soil and stuff died.

Corn _used_ to grow on _anything_. Even metal blocks. Not anymore. But stiil on many types of ground, earth, soil and so on..

And yes, last pattern works no problem, i normaly grox rows of 8x32. Used to use asphalt a lot since it's easier to avoid the "aiming problems" that CatPerson describes. But I am pretty sure asphalt doesn't work anymore.

Would probably be better to do
CECEC
CECEC
CECEC

With C being Corn
And E being Potato

It will be your number one patch for making Meat Stew.

Ah, interesting. One of those little changes I don't notice because I rarely ever grew corn in concrete, for example ;)

Testing to see where you can still place corn (I did not wait to see if it would actually grow properly):

Dirt (untilled)
Clay
Snow (yes you can still at least place a corn seed in snow)
the white/grey rocky-texture ground on City blocks (maybe it counts as "dirt")
Cement brick clusters, the ones you can break up for small stones (haha-probably won't actually grow there, but who knows)

...wasn't near sand, didn't try that.

Asphalt road, brick, concrete, cobblestone/wood, metal pilings etc etc all give the "can't place here" message.

Sand works, you can plant trees there too.

Talking about trees - no more solid tree walls. .Now trees have to be planted wit at least 3 empty blocks between them! :O

Needs sunlight, so if you have a hole in the ceiling (you can cover it with iron bars) yes. Truly underground - no.

I actually didn't think about tilling the ground and planting the corn in the untilled parts. This will save a lot of space (considering how much corn I plan to grow)
