However placing the seeds can be a little tricksy at times...most of the time I can do it in a quick rhythm but if I "miss" the rhythm of walking and placing, it'll act like it doesn't want to place and you have to shift your angle/get in the right spot again.
Edit: The same goes for cotton, btw.
Corn _used_ to grow on _anything_. Even metal blocks. Not anymore. But stiil on many types of ground, earth, soil and so on..
And yes, last pattern works no problem, i normaly grox rows of 8x32. Used to use asphalt a lot since it's easier to avoid the "aiming problems" that CatPerson describes. But I am pretty sure asphalt doesn't work anymore.

It will be your number one patch for making Meat Stew.
Testing to see where you can still place corn (I did not wait to see if it would actually grow properly):
Dirt (untilled)
Clay
Snow (yes you can still at least place a corn seed in snow)
the white/grey rocky-texture ground on City blocks (maybe it counts as "dirt")
Cement brick clusters, the ones you can break up for small stones (haha-probably won't actually grow there, but who knows)
...wasn't near sand, didn't try that.
Asphalt road, brick, concrete, cobblestone/wood, metal pilings etc etc all give the "can't place here" message.
Sand works, you can plant trees there too.
Talking about trees - no more solid tree walls. .Now trees have to be planted wit at least 3 empty blocks between them! :O
Needs sunlight, so if you have a hole in the ceiling (you can cover it with iron bars) yes. Truly underground - no.
