Dupe Schematics
What is up with finding dupe schematics? I am around day 28 and all I find are schematics for things I already know. I have like 25 of 65 blueprints and it is quite annoying. My scavenging is around 44 and my quality joe is maxed. I think I have found five hunting knife books, four crossbow books, etc. I have so many spare parts for guns that I can't create and it is annoying. :(

Random loot tables ... they don't take into account what you've already read.
Currently, reading duplicate skill books (more than one) gives you a tiny boost of xp. towards the related skill (Pistol book would give you XP for Pistol skill, for example), but you'd have to read a lot of extra books to gain a skill level. They're probably going to tweak/alter that at some point I'd guess.

Anyway - random loot is random. You may find a Cement book (or Crossbow, or whatever) almost first thing or not for game-weeks. ;)

With skills and perks being franticly worked on, I expect the whole schematic system is in flux. While all Alpha games change all the time, the pace of changes vary. Sometimes the Devs work on bug fixes, optimization passes, etc. and the game play remains quite stable. With a whole new character system being put in, I expect things to be the quite the opposite of that right now. Many blueprints may be made redundant or changed. The whole book system may be re-thought. Such are the joys of our Early Access adventure.
Personally, I'm playing Ark for the next week or two. By then, the next version should be released. Then, I shall gleefully plunge in to see what brilliant - albeit unpolished and probably buggy - features await my discovery.

I believe that they are moving away from books in the future updates. (not sure if this will be the case for Alpha 14 tho.)
So hopefully this frustration of looking for books will soon be over. :)

Srsly, things i did not get/ learn are one of the things that keep me on explore. Else i could stay at home, fully self sustained.

I think that the random number generator simply does not like you (or me). In some worlds, I get a decent spread of books, and visiting three bookstores twice (once now, and once 5-6 days later, when they have respawned) would give me most of the books, except for a few rare ones.
In other worlds, made with the same version of the game, I get 10+ copies of common books like leather tanning, but no hunting knife one, in several in-game weeks of playing.
It's indeed just random, and sometimes the odds are not in our favour. :)

The only thing I do not like about it is that you need a lot of luck in order to survive/get good books - this game seems to be more luck based than strategy based at the moment. But I have heard that the developers want to change the way this works, including adding jobs/professions that you can choose from.
Let's wait and see what the developers do - it's still Early Access after all. :)

The rule seems to be that you always find lots of things you don't need, but never the one thing you do need :steamfacepalm:

yeah I ended up using creative mode and just spawn in some books I needed. I did find the cement book in an air drop though. I have read they will keep the books in for those who want to scavenge in cities.

Yeah I can vouch for the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ RNG for schematics in book stores.

The latest one I raided had nothing but three copies of the Pistol Book and three copies of Leather Leggings.

That's it...

+1 on needing stabilization. Have had maps where i still lived in cobblestone structures past day 70 and had to go nomad because the biome i was in ran out of clay for repairs to the base and i got tired of running for it. Had parts to complete multiple copies of all weapons(same map), but all the weapons i could assemble i could not make the ammo for except the pistol so i used a crossbow/bow till the map went corrupt with an update. Never found a concrete or steel book. Was looting 4-5 bookstores and complete towns weekly trying to find something, just never happened. (Not complaining btw, I think that was the most fun map i've played.)

Started a new map, after the first two or three bookstores, had all but 3 of the schematics i would actually ever use including the rare ones lol. Sadly, i got so used to just running with a bow/crossbow thats still all the ranged weapons i run around with, even at night.

Like ppl already said its random -> so prey to RNG God or get over it :L
Vod Feb 20, 2016 @ 10:04pm
At least you found bookstores, I still havent found one after multiple cities/towns on mine lol.

I think they're keeping books, but also letting you get the knowledge through perks. Books are going to be a way of getting stuff earlier than normal.

It is random BUT... the sweeter books are also more rare. So expect to get a lot of normal books (knife, pistols) before you find Auger, Sniper and so on. And yes - you could be lucky and find them at start or never at all. Nobody said life in the apocalypse is fair. ;)

Some of the things still gated by books/schematics will not be gated this way for much longer. Crafting stations paired with skills will take the need for RNG away from things that can hold you back at present. It will remain for most things as is outside of the much needed recipes. I believe I remember MM using the example of the beaker being subject to RNG. That Could potentially stop progression as you need it for many things like bio fuel or antibiotics. It's less tan ideal now but TFP is working on solutions for upcoming builds.

Books will remain though as reading (or re-reading) them will add to the skill it correlates to.

I remember in A12 I used to get Steel and Minibike book a lot easier than in A13. I hope this tree skill feat is going to be good.
