Currently, reading duplicate skill books (more than one) gives you a tiny boost of xp. towards the related skill (Pistol book would give you XP for Pistol skill, for example), but you'd have to read a lot of extra books to gain a skill level. They're probably going to tweak/alter that at some point I'd guess.
Anyway - random loot is random. You may find a Cement book (or Crossbow, or whatever) almost first thing or not for game-weeks. ;)
Personally, I'm playing Ark for the next week or two. By then, the next version should be released. Then, I shall gleefully plunge in to see what brilliant - albeit unpolished and probably buggy - features await my discovery.
So hopefully this frustration of looking for books will soon be over. :)
In other worlds, made with the same version of the game, I get 10+ copies of common books like leather tanning, but no hunting knife one, in several in-game weeks of playing.
It's indeed just random, and sometimes the odds are not in our favour. :)
The only thing I do not like about it is that you need a lot of luck in order to survive/get good books - this game seems to be more luck based than strategy based at the moment. But I have heard that the developers want to change the way this works, including adding jobs/professions that you can choose from.
Let's wait and see what the developers do - it's still Early Access after all. :)
The rule seems to be that you always find lots of things you don't need, but never the one thing you do need
Yeah I can vouch for the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ RNG for schematics in book stores.
The latest one I raided had nothing but three copies of the Pistol Book and three copies of Leather Leggings.
That's it...
Started a new map, after the first two or three bookstores, had all but 3 of the schematics i would actually ever use including the rare ones lol. Sadly, i got so used to just running with a bow/crossbow thats still all the ranged weapons i run around with, even at night.
Books will remain though as reading (or re-reading) them will add to the skill it correlates to.
