Is the hammer in any way better than the wrench?

It's not so much a case of which is better, it's more a case of right tool for the job most of the time. A wrench can dismantle cars/cookers/sinks/toilets/airconditionders where as a hammer can't, so it all depends on what you want to do really. A pick goes through metal doors quick but an axe is best for the wood reinforcing, etc etc. (not much help but you get the idea)

Wrench is almost always better (two hit building, plus the dismantling), last patch the hammer was better at gathering ressources (like wood), think it was even better as an axe. However they have fixed that,

Hammer is better for doing things that it's not supposed to - like hitting zeds and breaking doors. Wrench is a better repair/upgrade tool.
Overall in my opinion, hammer only has some use if you do not yet have a wrench. Which is unlikely. Which is unfortunate.

Hammer is all in one tool and is good when you don't have specialized tool for all kind of work. So the wrench is better then hammer in upgrading and repairing stuff.

I love the claw hammer. It's my go-to melee weapon, but I carry a wrench for dismantling anyway. For upgrading, I use the nailgun.
