That is how i do it, when i have decided to make a permanent home.
You can also opt to go with a more elaborate build for your lip, like using wood frames instead to create somewhat more appealing (personal opinion) ledge around the building for a slanted edge instead of a blocky one.
You can even scrap those for metal trussing or iron bars if your lip. While less ascetically pleasing (again, personal opinion) then the wood ramps, those two lip choices have the added benefit of you being able to fire through them with your guns so you can easily pick off any zombies that are stuck down below. Note, iron bars also allow you to fire crossbow bolts and arrows through them as well so that's also something to consider.

I made 2 screenshots for you but cannot get them in here. You can watch them on my profile if you want. Nothing special at all but easy to bulidt in game and works pretty good. ;-)
