I gave up looking for any treasures. I figure if I have to dig a large pit in an are i'm not going to visit much it's not worth the effort. It'd be different if they were like placed under a rock or something but unmarked flat ground isn't worth the time.

Kids are so lazy and quick to give up.

Step 1: Go to location on your minimap.
Step 2: Locate and mark all boundries by placing a wood frame on the edges of the indicated area.
Step 3. Dig, no more then 3-4 spaces down in that area.

Treasure found!

Using an iron shovel you will be done with this in 4 minutes of digging. Its really not that hard.

The notes imply an X at the spot and no X was there. Something like this would be neat if there was a few stones placed in an X pattern or something at the spot where it was burried. Or say five boulders placed there with the middle one being where it's burried. it'd also be a nice sight to see as one travels because it adds flavor to things.

After reading the map the location will be marked on your map and compass. The treasure icon will blink red/white when youre standing in a possible location, and stop blinking once youve move out of the radious. So, mark these edges, and dig in the middle.

Also there is a perk that narrows that radius making it easier to find.

I know all of the above and did mark the outline by digging edges and spent 20 mins with a yellow iron shovel and no luck, so gave up and went and looted a town.

To me its nice, but not worth the effort and especially not worth spending skill points on, a safe delivers just as much goodies for less effort.

Just my opinion. Now a trail of clues, say 5 breadcrumbs, then narrowing it down to a 1-3 block radius and yeah I am in. Breadcrumbs as in travel here, get next piece of map, etc then eventually find the real treasure location. Yeah more work, but its also scouting as well so I am ok with it.

Digging up entire hill in an 11x11 meter area down upto 10 blocks. Do the math, that is a 1220 cubic meters of dirt to move.

Not worth it, just my opinion. When I can loot a house or business and get more loot.

just wait till you're a better shovler with a better shovel.

I shovel well.

I found it BUT it was a LOT of digging and off center for me. I was using a 380 green shovel. The good part was uppping my mining skill... I think it's good to put off some of the treasure hunts until/unless you have a good shovel. It's also ok to go back later. Fortunately, I haven't been burned yet finding crap in the boxes.. all have been fairly worth the effort.

I did one treasure chest.

The treasure was 2 hunting knife books.

Well, I'm certainly glad you guys are talking about this, I had no idea how this worked. Nothing like learning from the original buccaneers, aye Matey?

Yarrgh! Now let me see if I have this right:

Per Theodore ye gets a map scribbled over with something the scribe you captured can read. He reads it and then marks it on yer map.

A strange treasure icon blinks red and white when you are in a possible location, but this can easily be an 11 by 11 area. If it stops blinking, ain't no gOOooolldd, to be found. That's not good.

Then perhaps ye only gotter dig about 3 blocks down, but maybe it's 10, or maybe it's a dang lie since it was a pirate no doubt who did the tellin.

@ wwiiogre

I would like the breadcrumbs approach at least some of the time (3 crumbs are plenty or perhaps according to the value of the treasure it scales). Wouldn't hurt to have a variety of markers for the treasure area, that we could discover via experience also. I also think certainly that 6x6 area about 2 blocks deep ought to be enough work to put sweat on me brow, the devil be dun wid it if I was the one doing the hiding of me own goods. With the skill in treasure finding bringing it down to 3x3 or less.

These simply aren't worth the frickin hassle. By the time you can do them a lot easier, you don't need to waste your time going to and digging the things up anyway. So far I've gotten mostly garbage.

My best trick is, bi-sect the circle NSEW with crates... then dig from center 2 down, maybe 3 . n then s, then e, then w. I've found a couple of the chests easy this way. Others were a chore... but even if you find multi books you can re-read them for skill points. I found one chest had 6 books in it. That was well-worth the effort.

I wonder if treasure loot is tied to the perk tree that determines what you'll find? I upped that early on and that could be a reason, don't know.
