Multiplayer server connectivity lag
Heya

I love playing 7DtD with my friends on my private server, but we've always been plagued with lag issues. Since the overhaul of the zombies and game mechanics, our lag issues have become unbearable. I myself don't ever have any lag, but my friends who join my server via Hamachi always seem to lag. We've tried mixing up who the host is, but no matter who's hosting, the issue persists. Everything works great for a few minutes, and then suddenly nobody but the host is able to search loot, see zombies, place blocks ect. Relogging seems to fix this issue, but when you're spending more time connecting than playing the game, it's not much fun. We don't have fps lag, all of our rigs can run stuff like SWBF close to if not maxed. This problem is clearly connectivity related. Strangely enough, the game works for longer when we play on Navezgane as opposed to randomgen.

This is a long term problem that we've been dealing with for a while, and if anyone could offer advice, it would be much appreciated.

Dont use Hamachi, not sure why you even would?

Just have someone start a game with EAC off and have everyone else join from steam.

You can check the ping for yourself and everyone on the server...so you can get an accurate understanding of who is lagging and by how much.

Running released AAA game X well means about nothing when it comes to running EA Alpha games.

If you find ping is the issue, then there are tests you can run to find out in more detail the problem...

Hey, thanks for the reply. We've had a ton of issue with port forwarding in the past, that's why we went to Hamachi. If I don't use Hamachi, I'll still have to port forward, right?

Shouldnt have to if you join off steam.

May depend on equipment / firewalls though.

I'll try it when my friends get out of class. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

I used to get the port issue many builds ago, these days I just fire her up and my friends join in via steam. The odd time that has any hang ups, they have done it through the in game menu.

And as Mytheos mentioned turn off the EAC, that has bee screwing people more often than not in A13 from what I have read.

It's most definitely the port, no workaround there. :)

You dont have enough info to make that determination for certain, and you can forward the port, so there is always a solution to that issue.

You need to port forward if you start a dedicated server, but if you guy's all play at the same time, only one of you can start a peer to peer server directly in game. Start a new game, then set the option to be a public game, then add a password if you want, as long as the host is online. the server stay online.

If the issue is because you guy's want to play not at the same time, then yeah you will need a dedicated server for that.

Also this game is hard on ram when you host and can be hard on your gpu too, because the engine render everything in a certain radius, even if you don't see it on your screen, so you can get lag spike when you enter a town or when there is a cavern underneath. mostly because the game is not optimised yet since it's still in devellopment. The pimps know about this and it's supposed to get fixed on the next update.

Okay, I get it now. I was messing around with dedicated servers before and I didn't really know what I was doing. Thanks for the reply and the heads up.

Thanks everyone for the replies!
I'm playing with anticheat off and I've ditched Hamachi. So far, the problem seems to be solved. No more weird lag!
